Tell me about the 586

I am looking at trading a Glock 21 for a like brand new S&W 586 in .357 mag with a 4" barrel, leather holster and speed loader. I have an old .22 S&W, my dad has a .44 mag. I was looking for a .44, but have decided a .357 would do and this gun is freaking beautiful. It was striped wood grips that look awesome and the bluing looks brand new. Anyone had any bad experience with these? I don't know the year on the gun, but it has had a maximum of 100 rounds through it, but probably a lot less, as I said, it looks brand new. What are these generally worth?

586 is S&W's carbon steel mid size or "L" frame. These revolvers were made to take full time heavy magnum loads.

These are highly desirable pistols and they are known for their accuracy.

Painting with a broad brush, they are in the range of $350 ~ $450 for non collectible, standard versions.

The fixed sight variation is a 581, stainless versions are 686 and fixed sight 681.

I recently bought a 4" 686 for $400 and then sunk another $70 into it for repairs at S&W, the barrel was clocked and the side plate and cylinder screws were buggered. I am grateful to have it and as it is my 3rd (I sold the other two) L frame, I will never part with it.

In my personal opinion, it's one of the finest guns ever designed, mechanically, aesthetically and with near perfect balance with the 4" barrel. In the condition you're mentioning, the gun is probably worth somewhere around $500 give or take, depending on the area. I'd make that trade in a second.

NIB 686 in CA is $650+ do the deal and get the 586.

Trading a $400 Glock for a S&W 586 is a good deal.

It's the gun that turned me onto revolvers though I went the stainless route with the 686. My first time out on a date with my now wife was with to a shooting range. I had my first pistol with me, a Ruger MKII .22 rimfire auto and was really excited to break it in. She had the 586.

i have one in a 6" barrel, but i often wish i had found a 4" instead. it cost me $365 used in very good condition...a little blueing wear at the muzzle and sharp edges of the cylinder...your standard handling wear on a blued revolver that is more than 20 years old [mine's an '83]. it's been a great gun for me. there's a pic of mine in the 686 thread referenced above. i've since replaced the pachmyr grips with factory S&W target stocks. i much prefer the original look, and even feel that i shoot it more accurately than with the pachmyrs with finger grooves. if the one you're looking at is like-new, then i think you've got yourself a great trade.
