Guys,

I have a chance to buy a Colt Combat Elite at a reasonable rate.

What makes it a "Combat Elite" model? What is special about them?

The one I can buy is two toned MK IV series 80 with wrap around grips and a solid full sized trigger. It has standard three dot colt sights.

Tell me about this gun and the "Combat Elite" series.

There is nothing real special about a combat elite. It is a basic series 80 two tone colt. It should come in either a pre enhanced or enhanced model. The enhanced would have the following . In1992 colt introduced a new set of features for its Goverment model series pistols. These new features include: a flat top slide, angled rear slide serrations, scalloped ejection port, combat style hammer, bevertail grip safety, relief cut under trigger guard and a long trigger. Nib Combat elites in my area seem to sell for 650-799. hope this helps :)

I would point out that there were two models of Colt "O" models at that time. The combat elite was the higher grade, Government Model not a 1991A1 which was a budget model brought out to compete with Springfield's 1911A1.

Everything else is as larry starling put it.

The Combat Elite pistols started production before the 1991A1 models, and were the successors to the Combat Government pistols. Combat Elites were built on Series '80 pistols with the "Mark IV" rollmarks in two calibers, .45 ACP and .38 Super. The frames were stainless steel and the slides were blued carbon steel. While (many of) the pistols shipped with neoprene wraparound grips, the front straps were serrated. The right side of the slides were rollmarked " * Combat Elite *", where the "*" denotes a star.

Combat Elites were made in two basic styles, pre-enhanced and enhanced. The first pistols were pre-enhanced and came with Commander rowel hammers, a Commander-like grip safety, high-profile fixed sights, and a short trigger. The slide serrations were the traditional vertical Colt style. The later pistols were enhanced pistols and came with a flattened slide top, Elliason adjustable rear sights, a lowered and flared ejection port, a long trigger, slanted National Match slide serrations, an elongated Commander hammer, a downward slanting beavertail grip safety, and an undercut triggerguard. The enhanced pistol serial numbers should end with an "E".

It should also be mentioned that enhanced Combat Elite slides were sold on the aftermarket and used to assemble faux Combat Elites. I know because I built one for my own use. A rear Combat Elite should have a "CG" serial number prefix. There have been other Elite pistols, including the 10mm Delta Elite, an Elite 10/.40, and a 9x19 "Elite IX".

The pistol mentioned by the thread starter sounds like a pre-enhanced pistol. These pistols are more desirable than the later enhanced pistols, mostly due to the sights, rowel hammer, and grip safety.

Well, I bought it. Very tight groups, but it shoots about 2 inch left and about three inches high at 50 feet. The first 150 rounds of ball I shot with a Wilson combat mag and it had two FTF. After cleaning and switching to a Chip McCormick 8 round mag I fired 200 rounds (100 rounds Atlanta Arms reloads and 100 rounds Blazer) with no problems.

Very nice, accurate shooter with a great trigger. I am thinking about adding the Novak Adjustable tritium sights.

Just to throw in another arcane detail; the pre-enhanced Combat Elite has a collet bushing, which I started out with no strong opinion on, but after a few years, began to annoy me. My Combat Elite was my first full size 1911A1 pattern pistol, and I have to say that it was a good buy; accurate, reliable, all around solid performer that's pretty to look at.

The Combat Elites seem to have a small cult following, mostly due to one being prominently featured in the movie Terminator II.
