So I was browsing around and I ran across a thread mentioning an XCR. I clicked on it thinking it was about a Remington 700 XCR. I was surprised when I saw pictures of a very cool looking semi auto "black rifle".

I did alittle bit of reading about it, and what little I've read, I really like. I like that it is piston driven, and can use AR grips and rail covers. I also like that there is supposed to be a .308 version coming out sometime.

So i guess what I am looking for here are reviews, differences in basic operation from an AR or AK, or anything else you can tell me about them. Like, how is the accuracy compared to an AR, or how is the reliability compared to an AK? What about magazines?

I dont have any "black rifles" and I want to get one sometime later this year or next. I generally prefer bolt rifles, but I would like to have 1 solid "black rifle" in my collection (while its still legal).

I originally was set on the Bushmaster ACR (Magpul Masada), but I heard the price was upped to around $1800-$2000... and for a semi auto .223, that is not something I am even remotely interested in.

Also, 2 specific questions:
1) is it compatible with AR buttstocks? specifically the Magpul Precision Rifle Stock?
2) any word on when the .308's should be available?

Convince me that the XCR is (OR is not) the "black rifle" for me

I own or have owned AK's, SKS's, AR's, FAL's, and a Mini 14. I have also tried M1As and HK91 type rifles. That said the XCR is my favorite "black rifle" for several reasons.

1) The adjustable gas system eliminates muzze climb when adjusted for the ammo. No ear shatter muzzle brake necessary.

2) It is entirely user serviceable, requiring no special tools. Just a few punches, allen wrenches, and a box wrench for the muzzle attachment are required.

3) Parts are readily available and easily ordered from RA unlike most other recent rifles. 6.8 caliber conversion has been shipping for months. The 7.62x39 will be shipping this month. The 6.5x39 is in the pipe too.

4) Monolithic upper so the forend never comes loose and optics mounting options are where ever you need.

5) The ambi-bolt release that can be release with the trigger finger.

6) Folding and collapsing stock is an option. AR15 stocks will work with either the collapsing stock adapter or the folding and collapsing stock adapter.

7) A 308 version is coming so I can have a battle rifle and an assult rifle with the same controls. In case it does not get here before a ban, the XCR is highly similar to the controls on my FALs.

8) The parts such as the bolt, and extractor are extra beefy (See VB3's thread for pics).

I have a Robinson Arms XCR and love it.

I really like the adjustable gas system that allows you to get the best performance with out causing undue wear on your weapon, the gas system also has a setting for suppresors if that is something that interests you.

Almost any AR accessories will work with it, the only exceptions I can think of is uppers and triggers.

The charging handle being on the left side is better in my opinion that the AR 15 charging handle being on the top.

The Magpul PRS stock will work on the XCR and there is some pictures of a XCR with a magpul stock on the XCR forum.

A friend and I were out at the range and he brought his Bushmaster AR 15 with A 20 Inch heavy barrel and my XCR with a 16 inch light barrel.

The XCR can use any AR magazines. The XCR in 7.62 x 39 will not use AK magazines.

From what I have read the XCR is just as relieble as an AK after the break in period. Mine has only had a few issues and most of them are my fault, but that said the Robinson Arms customer service is great they the best customer service of any company I have worked with.

There are plans for a 5.45 x 39 upper and .22LR upper down the road. Also Robinson Arms is making a XCR PDW, a new SCAR style stock, and a new trigger assembly.

I do not know when the .308 is going to ship, but I would think it would be late this year or early next year but do not take that for any thing that is just my uneducated guess.

If you have any more questions let me know I will try to answer them

Another place to check for info would be www.xcrforum.com

Another XCR happy chappie here......:D

One point other than the technology of the rifle is the support the end user gets.

Robinson Arms, some years ago, used to have a mediocre customer service reputation, that couldn't be further from the truth now.

The company actively solicits feedback from the users and is very responsive to both concerns as well as requests for enhancement. In addition they are of a size that means they can be relatively agile to the market in comparison to the big boys.

As a couple of examples,

Users requested a non tool adjustable version of the gas valve, RA delivered and ensured the enhancement could be bought and retro fitted on existing rifles.

Some users aren't too comfortable with the stock trigger so RA are developing in house an adjustable match trigger.

A few users had problems with the firing pin tip shearing off so RA redesigned a new firing pin and rolled it out in a couple of weeks.

The platform IS still evolving based on this feedback which I find comforting, I can't wait to get my hands on the 7.62x51......Just gotta convince "She who must be obeyed" that more toys are GOOOOOOD...
