For me, it's kind of a toss up. I think Heat has probably one of the best orchestrated and choreographed shoot out sequences ever put together. It's really finely done. A real variety of weapons as well as some good tactics, use of cover, and lots of bullet holes!

But another movie that seems to have a great shoot out was that FX original (based on the event) 44 Minutes. That one was pretty slick due to just about the entire movie being one long gunfight. Pretty awesome.

The Way of the Gun has some awesome shoot outs as well, but I haven't seen it in ages.

So what do you guys think? What's the best shoot'em up scene out there, and why? :)

"The Wild Bunch", and recently "Open Range". I liked the fact that every shot wasn't spot on. Gives me hope! ;)

Boy this is a toughie. I loved Cagney blasting away from atop the refinery in White Heat because: Made it Ma, top of the world! I also really liked seeing Bruce Willis' character blowing away John Travalta's character in Pulp Fiction - that was great maybe just because I never was a Travalta fan, at least until that movie. Then again, we have the final scenes in the life of Leon in The Professional. Of course, seeing John Wayne on horseback, in the shootout scene in True Grit was pretty good too, that line "Fill your hands..." was a classic, as was his working the oversized lever on his Winchester with one hand while holding the reigns in his teeth and his revolver in his left hand. Just guns, bullets, guts and gore great shootouts do not make. I'll have to keep thinking on this one for a bit before I can really pick a favorite.

I second Hard Boiled. Any movie where a guy breaks a bamboo bird cage to pull out guns to shoot is cool with me. :D

Special showing in selected theaters. Not everyone has seen this "one" :D

I dont do "best" or "name one" very well - can you tell?

I kinda like Quigley Down Under. But then again, I'm kinda a 'make the shot count' sorta guy, not 'make a huge mess' kinda guy.

'Said I never had much use for one, never said I didn't know how to use one'

I have never been able to find "Way of the Gun", but am curious. "Heat" is good. People need to remember that when "The Wild Bunch" was made there was not as much the could do, stunt or digital wise, to compete with today so I think that makes it pretty impressive.

In no order:

The Wild Bunch
Saving Private Ryan, different but unbelievable gun action
The Long Riders (I think that was it with the Carradines and the Keach brothers)
Millers Crossing. Albert Finney makes a Thompson sing like an opera.
Last Man Standing
Taxi Driver

What the Hell is "Heat"?

Never heard of it.

The movie "The Long Riders" has a pretty good shoot-out, when the James-Younger gang is holed up in a barn.

Of course, the greatest shoot-out is at the end of "The Good, The Bad & The Ugly," but that's more a matter of the movie-maker's art than it is a matter of shots fired.

Heat is an action movie from the 90's.

Blockbuster has it for rent.

If you've never seen it, by all means check it out.

It is not completely factual with regard to guns, but it is a great deal more accurate than most of what Hollywierd turns out. The carachters actually reload, and the cases expended match the weapons being used (unlike the Matrix bank scene).

Another fairly good movie is Truth or Consequences New Mexico with Keifer Sutherland.

Dpends-

For realism: HEAT, Way of the Gun, Band of Brothers, Blackhawk Down

For sheer cool: Hard Boiled*, The Killer, Bullet in the Head, The Matrix, Equilibrium, The Wild Bunch

*Chow-Yun Fat sliding down a bannister, blazing away with dual Tokarevs, and he doesn't even lose his toothpick.

That scene from "The Naked Gun" where Lt Drebbin and the badguy are shooting at each other from behind trashcans 10 feet away. :neener:

Yup, that's my favorite shoot-out ever put to film.

Open Range, in the final scene, was one of the best I've seen for realism.

Equilibrium

Was just an awsome movie for being as low-budget as it was. A shameless copy of several movies perhaps, but I really enjoyed it. There were some things in that movie I have never seen before.

I can't BELIEVE no-one's nominated

"Tombstone," especially as it's been on The Western Channel in constant rotation.

It has two significant shoot-outs; the primary one at the back of the OK Corral and when Wyatt, Holiday, et al catch up to Curly Bill and the Cowboys.

"Where's Wyatt?"

"Down at the creek - walking on water........"

Best shoot out overall - "The Wild Bunch." Call me crazy, but the "Heat" shootout didn't do it for me. ;)

Most over-the-top John Woo gunfight - end of "A Better Tomorrow II," hands down.

The big shootout scene in “Taxi Driver†and the last long chase and shootout in “Dirty Harryâ€.

The restaurant scene from "The Godfather" when Al Pachino goes to the restroom and gets a revolver taped to the back of the stool and then comes back out.

The various scenes in “Blade Runner†when he airs another one up.
