the 10 best movie gunfights of all time

The Wind and The Lion with Sean Connery, Candice Bergen, Brian Keith as Theodore Roosevelt, and John Huston as Secretary of State. Although very very loosely based on a true incident prior to WWI the hollywood version is quite good. (You can read more about it on Wikipedia.) The good scenes were with the U.S. Marine company attacking a palace in Tangiers and a Marine Platoon engaging germans during a hostage exchange. Maybe not a top ten action film but pretty good all the same. Semper fidelis.

NoirFan already mentioned this one, and I have to give it another vote. "L.A. Confidential" had one of the best gunfight scenes in any movie - ever. The shootout at the Victory Motel was very realistic from a firearm and a wounding standpoint (no miracle guns, and when someone got hit, it was serious). All in all, it was an excellent movie.

Here are a few of my favorites that I haven't seen mentioned yet. Really there are soooo many gun-shootout scenes in the movies over the last 50 years that it's really very hard to pick even a top 10. But here's a few movies I really like, and yes, they involved GUN VIOLENCE!!!

Remake of 310 to Yuma with a great cast and some excellent actions scenes:

48 Hours is a great action move too:

As anther poster mentioned, Reservoir Dogs, great gun movie:

Great thread, but one thing that always seem to ruin the authenticity of gun fight scenes for me is the lack of recoil. It's a give away that they're shooting blanks, especially when somebody dumps a 50 round Thompson drum and the barrel never even vibrates. I haven't gone through all of the clips yet... are there any where the muzzles jump like there's some recoil going on?

Open range is pretty epic. IMO pretty realistic. I like Silverado for many reasons, especially shooting scenes where Scott Glen gets ridden over and Danny Glover shoots the bad guy in the hand with his Henry from atop the hill. And earlier where they recover the wagon train's cash box and shoot the guy above them after he shoots Rosanna Arquette's husband.

The battle of the boom in the Sandpebbles has always been a favorite of mine.

Well, you said, "of all time."

How about "Scarface" in 1932 with Paul Muni?

There's another one from about then with Edward G. Robinson where there must have been over 1000 shots fired. He even emptied a Luger, threw it away, and picked up another gun. Too bad I can't find it now.

There's a bunch that are great, but my favorites are in The Outlaw Josey Wales, and The Unforgiven.
The best though is Tombstone, with Doc and Johnny Ringo.

"The strain was just more than he could bear. "

Val Kilmers best role ever, by far
