Top 10 Reasons that Thinking Americans Love Their Country
By Dan Flynn
www.FrontPageMagazine.com | October 28, 2002

Despite the intellectual pretensions of those who practice it, anti-Americanism is reflexive and mindless. Patriotism, despite its bad reputation amongst the intelligentsia, is a rational sentiment for an American to hold. This is the thesis I prove in my new book, Why the Left Hates America.

No one is obligated to love their country. Yet Americans do-overwhelmingly. Why are Americans, despite the national self-hatred expressed by so many elites, still patriotic? Because America is a force for good in the world as no country has ever been.

Here are ten good reasons why thinking Americans should love their country:

10. Entertainment
The movies the world watches, the television shows they tune into, and the music they listen to are, for the most part, produced in the United States. For instance, the U.S. exports more than 25 times the number of movies and television shows than it consumes from abroad, a fact that causes Ben Wattenberg to observe quite correctly that America is "the most culturally potent nation in the world." Even the virulent America-hater Saddam Hussein reportedly spends a good portion of his time watching American-made movies such as The Godfather and Enemy of the State.

9. Immigration
During the hundred years ending in the 1920s, a majority of the world's immigrants came to one lone country: the United States. Today, the U.S. takes in more immigrants than at any point in its history. Yet, the Left portrays America as a bastion of xenophobia and bigotry. Alexander Hamilton (the first Secretary of the Treasury), John Jacob Astor (America's first multimillionaire), Alexander Graham Bell (invented the telephone), Louis B. Mayer (Hollywood pioneer), Selman Waksman (cured tuberculosis), and Ralph Baer (invented the video game) are among the immigrants to America whose lives belie the Left's premise. Just as those who complain about "oppression" in the U.S. would never entertain the idea of living anywhere else, the people around the world we allegedly oppress flock to come here. This contradiction between leftist theory and real-world practice illustrates just how delusional the central tenets of leftist thought really are.

8. Technology
Nothing disproves the Leftist mantra that "all cultures are equal" more than technology does. Americans have given the world motion pictures, the telephone, the television, the computer, the Internet, the airplane, the VCR, and a host of other machines and devices that have vastly improved the quality of life on the planet. Ironically, the terrorists who hate the U.S. give America a tacit endorsement every time they turn on a light, escape the heat through air conditioning, monitor their exploits on television or the internet, or communicate via telephone.

7. Creating Wealth
America is the sun around which the world economy revolves. The typical creator of wealth in the world is an American. Foreigners benefit from buying better products from American companies and working better jobs manufacturing such products. Take America's $9 trillion dollar economy out of the picture, and the economic well being of the rest of the world nose-dives.

6. Generosity
With great wealth comes great generosity. In 2000, Americans gave more than $200 billion in charity, dwarfing the amount donated elsewhere. Since World War II, the U.S. government has given well in excess of $500 billion (not adjusted for inflation) in foreign aid. Last year, our government distributed more than $20 billion to 130 countries. While American taxpayers have a right to gripe, what are we to make of foreign beneficiaries who return our favor by burning U.S. flags and chanting "death to America"?

5. Human Achievement
Americans have stretched the bounds of the possible. The first transatlantic flight, putting a man on the moon, breaking the speed of sound, constructing the Hoover Dam, and building the Panama Canal serve as testimony to American courage and ingenuity. It wasn't Danes or Bolivians or Iranians or Koreans who achieved these feats. It was Americans. This is significant.

4. Enlightened Power
The Soviet Empire ruled over Eastern Europe. The Ottoman Empire claimed dominion over vast stretches of the Islamic world. The Empire of the Sun sought dominion over the Orient. The American Empire rules...only Americans. America is an historical curiosity. It is the most powerful country in the world, yet it eschews imperialism. Instead, it has used its military might to liberate. Nazi Germany, North Korea, Soviet Russia, Hussein's Iraq, and Communist Vietnam are among the nefarious states we sought to prevent from increasing their totalitarian control over others. The world is a better place because America, and not some other country, is the sole superpower.

3. Medicine
Will Nigerian doctors make the blind see? Will Cambodians cure AIDS? Will Pakistanis eradicate cancer? The answer is probably not. Why? The reason is that non-Westerners have had no discernable impact on modern medicine. This year, like 45 of the last 60, an American won a share of the Nobel Prize in the field of medicine. Americans cured polio and tuberculosis, developed vaccines for hepatitis B and yellow fever, pioneered modern chemotherapy, and produced the CAT scan and MRI. What's there to hate about that?

2. Democracy
Leftists harp that American democracy is tainted because not everyone possessed the right to vote at the Founding. Denial of the vote in the 18th century, however, was universal. What made America unique was not that some people could not vote, but that anybody could. More than 215 years after the Constitutional Convention, most people on the planet still do not have a right to vote. Every Arab country, more than three-fourths of African nations, and many of the most populous nations in the Orient still deny their citizens the right to choose their own leaders. Despite the continued rejection by many foreign leaders, the ideals of the American Founding became contagious. Our example served to topple regimes far from our shores. Pro-democracy activists don't quote the founding documents of Saudi Arabia or appropriate the cultural symbols of China. They cite passages from the Declaration of Independence and hoist replicas of the Statue of Liberty.

1. Freedom
America has shined as a beacon of freedom in an unfree world for more than two centuries. To this day, for instance, most people living outside our borders reside in countries where the private practice of broadcast journalism is illegal and where the state is the dominant banker. Americans can say anything they want, worship any god they choose, and associate with any motley crew around. Our legacy is not slave chains, Wounded Knee, and the murder of James Byrd, but American GIs liberating a Nazi death camp, an immigrant's first glance of lady liberty's torch, and Ronald Reagan exhorting the Soviet's to tear down the Berlin Wall. If nothing else, America means freedom.

What country in the history of the world boasts such an impressive record of bettering the lot of all of humanity? The answer is no country. "Americans need to face the truth about themselves," Jeane Kirkpatrick once remarked, "no matter how pleasant it is."

I am here to stay. Since coming to America, I've not even willing to leave for vacation. The gift of American citizenship -- the best one can give to kids.

No need to put down the rest of the world in comparison -- America stands on its own merits.

I'll have to disagree with a few points.

ENTERTAINMENT:
And this is a GOOD thing?!?! Great, now people in Bangladesh can watch people live in an apartment complex cheat on each other! Woohooo! Goodbye, you are the weakest link, is that your final answer? Horrible. dreadfully horrible, you are possibly the worst singer I have ever met.

TECHNOLOGY:
Technology isn't always a good thing. Sure I love my Internet--it's right up there with running water--technology in the hands of the wrong people will also make the populace easier to oppress. I have a feeling [tinfoil] that technology will give the socialists the ability to strip our freedom.[/blackhelos] NICS anyone? Registration? Smart guns?

HUMAN ACHIEVEMENT
OK hold on a minute here. While I agree we have acheived a whole lot more in the last 150 years more than the rest of the world, I don't know where to even start with this one. The Germans, English and Chinese did some great things. Would I want to be a citizen of any of the above? HELL NO! But to discredit the rest of the world in achievement is just...

Yes, I'm proud to be an American, but don't think those are what make us better. It's our republican (lower case 'R') form of government, our free press and right to keep and bear arms that make us great.

Skunk:

That you have an opinion about the facts does not change them.

And I'd really like to hear how someone would use the internet to "oppress" someone.

You were right about the tinfoil thing... ;)

Skunk: Hong Kong filmmeister John Woo invented the 150-shot automatic pistol. Chow Yun Fat perfected its use. ;)

Doc,

Not disagreeing that technology is a good thing, but it's a dangerous thing in the hands of tyrants. Like I mentioned, technology gave our once great state the ability to track our gun purchases. Whether you get a cell phone, water bill, apartment, car, etc., you are tied to your social security number.

Not sure if you have those Fastrak (sp?) lanes up north, but in Socal you put a little doodad on your front window and it bills you as you drive under the carpool lane. It's POSSIBLE, in theory, to require cars to carry these to track movement, to say, be activated to stop child abductors.

As our rights are becoming privileges and inane wants become rights, there isn't much our state does that won't surprise me. While there are tons of hardworking Californians out there (who the hell pays for this stuff??) the amount of people who are unconcerned with civil liberties far outnumber them.

Technology has allowed us to progress in that we are more effecient (well not sure, I just had a user come to me and complain she can't live without her Palm, and her brand spanking new Dell doesn't have enough serial ports, she has an older Palm and is paralyzed, I still print my phone numbers on a piece of paper just in case :D ). Technology may make American industry more productive, but it doesn't necessarily make us a better country. Freedom does.

Respectfully, Skunky

That is an interesting view, Skunk, and I think you raise some valid points.

Yes, we do have the fasttrack thingies. (In the bay area, that is)

:)

Drjones

Skunk,

It is true that tech makes it a lot easier to spy on more people and track them. The main trend we are going to see in the next 25 years is a loss of privacy.

The flip side is - tyrants need a monopoly on information and intel to be truly effective. They may be spying on us, but we will all e spying back. More people will have cameras in their homes and business, some people are even talking about "event recorders" that work like a personal black box - they record 30 minutes of audio and even video and if something happes (arrest, abuse, robery, etc) you hit a button or the system detects an anomaly and begins archiving the event. There are a lot more people with camcorders and they are only getting cheaper, smaller and more connected.

The result is that we are going to have an increasingly transparent society. The idea that the men in black whirly birds can come and steal you in the night is becoming MUCH less possible - insofar as that kind of thing has to be done in secret.

The government and the police are subject to this increased surveilance as well and they have to mind their manners. Its just not safe for the cops to abuse people in public any more because they never know when they are on candid camera.

Take all that and throw in the fact that average citizens can now digitally zap sound and video to any place in the world in mere minutes and you have a system that makes it extremely hard to compartmentalize a population.

The internet has done more for freedom than any other invention since the printing press because it is impossible to hold a monopoly on information now. The leftist media is extremely frustrated by this development because a lot of us do not turn to them for news any more. It is not hard to get on the internet and go to places like this board and get first hand eye witness reports from citizens on the scene.

Sure, the loss of privacy is worrisome, but the loss is essentially universal so its not like we are naked infront of an audience - its more like everyone is slowly wearing less and less and nobody wants to point a finger lest several point back.

Think positive bro. :)

I think visiting other countries is a good thing.

Other countries pick up a lot of good ideas from the US. South Korea and formerly Hong Kong have pretty free markets.

In California we're busy regulating honest folks out of business.

As much as I had fun in Korea and Japan I couldn't wait to come home and play with Grace and Nina.

Unknown Sailor,

I thought the poor here have it bad, and they certainly do, but crap, I made a wrong turn in Korea and ended up in a shantytown of tin shacks. And S. Korea is a WEALTHY country.

When I visit other countries, I come home proud to be an American. Other countries do a lot of things right, because they follow our footsteps, even long after we regulate ourselves out of doing the things that made us the best.

I think one day, we're going to get a nasty wake-up call when China passes us by because they're working so hard to take over the world and we're working so hard to be soft and cuddly.

Skunk and DJ,

If you guys appreciate the U.S. so much, why don't you move here?

I hear you can immigrate from Kali pretty easily.

Shhhhh!!!

You'll blow my cover!

I'm a spy.

:D

Im going to have to put you arrogant americans in your place here. Sorry

10. Entertainment
I agree. Not much to say here.

9. Immigration
Yes the majority of the worlds migrants do go to the US. Well done.
However Im not sure that this is a good thing. You may wish to think about it.

8. Technology
Oh you did make me laugh when I read this.

Motion Pictures - Frenchman Louis Lumiere and others.

Telephone - Alexander Graham Bell was the first to patent it. However please read this (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Invention_of_the_telephone)

Television - The history of tv is too long to be put here instead look at this (http://www.physlink.com/Education/AskExperts/ae408.cfm)

Computer - First Electronic Computer was made by Alan Turing from Cambridge UK (http://wiki.answers.com/Q/Who_invented_the_computer)

Internet - Englishman Tim Burners-Lee with help from Belgian Robert Cailliau
(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tim_Berners-Lee) This disgusted me when I read it by the way.

Airplane - The one thing on this list that was made by an american. Well done. 1 out of 6 is not bad. (<Sarcasm, by the way)

Yes you probably have made some good inventions that we use everyday. But the fact of the matter is. Without every other invention that every other country had made. You would be no where.

Romans - Roads. Proper flat straight roads.
Alcohol - First found in Ancient Egypt

Look at this for more, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Timeline_of_historic_inventions#1900s, I think you'll find that without most of them, human civilization would be nowhere.

7. Wealth
I think you'll find that if you took any developed countries economy out of the world it would have a catastrophic effect. And yes you probably do have the largest amount of billionaires. Well done. It doesn't really mean much but there you go.

6. Generosity
It's not really a good thing to be throwing money away.

5.Human Achievement
Well done for all your great achievements over the last century. However your not looking at the greatest achievements of the enitre human race ever are you? And anyway it's not like these achievements have actually been useful.

4. Enlightened Power
This was a funny one to read. "The American Empire rules...only Americans. America is an historical curiosity. It is the most powerful country in the world, yet it eschews imperialism" It's not that you "eschew imperialism" it's that you physically can not take over other countries. The rest of the world won't let you. We live in a very different time now. The british empire ruled because no one could stop it. The mongolian empire rules because no one could stop it. The roman empire ruled because no one could stop it. I'm sorry America but your a little late, say about 100 years late. You have little military power unless the most of the world is with you nowadays. It's not that your so good you won't invade. It's that you can't invade.
You act as if you, and you alone, liberated all of them countries. You didn't. Britain, France, Australia and god knows how many more helped you. Dumbass. Don't say things you can't defend. Any way, half of them things were none of your business.

3. Medicine
Yes and Britain made pennicilin. Well done. Every country has made medicine. Well done for getting the noble prize in medicine as well. As if anyone cares.

2. Democracy
Your government is no better than any others in the world. Ancient Greece allowed people to begin to vote. Britain was the first to allow women to vote. Once again, your talking out of your arsehole.

1. Freedom
Yeah sure. You can a be a beacon of freedom. Every other country was then they gave up, you will too.

The problem is, just because your the biggest economy in the world for this century does not mean that you are the best. Chine will become the biggest one day. Britian was the biggest before. The roman empire, the mongolian empire, the macedonian empire. They have all had their place in human history. Just because it's your turn, doesn't mean you have to boast about it. Sorry that I mistook your stupidity for arrogance. I'm arrogant. Your just stupid.

The only point that actually matters is Freedom. Freedom begets innovation and wealth. Make no mistake, freedom is what makes this country so great.

Also, I take exception to #2, "Democracy." Democracy is a tyranny of the majority. That's why this country is a Constitutional Republic.

Every other country was then they gave up, you will too.
Not true at all; most countries are formed via dictatorship or monarchy. The United States is relatively unique in the sense that it was founded on the principles of freedom and limited government. Will it fail? History says it will. All that's required for evil to prevail is for good men to stand by and do nothing. Human history does repeat itself through the cycle of war, peace, and revolution.

I have to add this fact due to an ancestor (g-g-grandmother) is 'native american' (cherokee) America's greatness is due to the fact that the 'aboriginies' or 'indians' were wiped out by the influx of European 'immigrants'. their extermination and exploutation was 'governement policy'.
that said I love my country and about 75% of my fellow countrymen (actual count not feasibly possible) and American ham & cheeseburgers are the world's best. fried chicken is another 'world's best'.
