Tennesee paper publishes CCW List

Part of me looks at that list and wonders why more aren't involved (TFA for example.)

Of course, my gut reaction is that this makes the perfect excuse to write for closing of this law. Figures the paper does it near the end of the session, when there is no chance of us getting a law written and passed.

Jeez... are we going to continue to see this until we pass a law? Seriously, why do laws have to be passed for everything? What ever happened to manners and character and all those things that kept papers from doing this kind of crap?

Fight BACK

Hey Guys,

The same thing happened recently in Virginia, and I believe the CCW guys in Virginia got on it, right away. I believe they passed a law (or the gov did something) that would make this illegal in the future. One major news network here also ran a piece about it, and showed a woman who had moved to get away from an abusive ex husband, and she is now afarid for her life. They also showed a parole officer, who HAS BEEN VISITED by people some of his former parolees, just so they could now say "I know where you live." Overall the coverage leaned far to the side of condemning the paper's decision to publish the list.

ALSO - they got aggressive, published the writer's name, address, and phone number on an online forum, and welcomed people who didn't agree to call ald write the lady at home. I think she might learn a valuable lesson from it all.

Don't take this sitting down, fellas - show the person how public info can work for both sides.

I called the Tennessean and spoke with an assistant in the Editors office. She said they had received hundreds of phone calls this morning from people that were outraged by this.
Please give them a call and let them know how you feel about this. The switchboard number is 615-259-8000, ask for the office of the editor.

The bigger picture: Why?

For some insight, I'd take a look at this paper's circulation numbers. How are they doing?

Almost all major and medium-market papers are in a steady 1-2% subscribership decline every year. (Except for centrist/conservative publications, go figure…) So I'll wager a guess that this publication is no different.

I suspect these papers are publishing the CCW lists knowing full well there will be "controversy" under the "there's no such thing as bad publicity" theorem. They can't not be aware of the Roanoke Times flap, so why else did they do it?

As in most things in life, "follow the money".

The list was removed from their website today after the Tennessean received "thousands" of complaints. The Editor apoloigized for it being posted.
