You really can't go wrong with this state. Make sure you join the TFA and get involved. We have Chapters in all 4 of the big cities, and a few smaller ones scattered about.

Then I read this.

I am a RN

I am a nursing student, and even though I Direct the Chattanooga Chapter of the TFA and always welcome more members, I don't know if I want competition in the job market!

TFA

I am a student in Memphis and I cannot honestly recommend this area as a decent place to live. There are suburbs of Memphis that are okay, but not quite rural, as you required. We do have a great VA hospital, in which I have volunteered, downtown. The city itself, in my experience, is too liberal and dangerous for my taste. There are others that can give you better advice on that topic.

However, if you move to this great state, I personally second the idea that you join the TFA. The Tennessee Firearms Association, in my humble opinion, is the greatest asset that we (2A advocates) have in this state. I am not a ‘resident’ of this state, so to speak, but I met some representatives of the TFA at a charity firearms event and I literally could not wait to give my money (for a years membership) to these guys. The executive director, John Harris, is a prominent lawyer in Nashville. I was in that area of the country recently and I fell in love with the land. There is some nice scenery over there, and I would not mind spending my life in those mountains.

I wish the best to you,

Popov

You don't want to live IN the city of Memphis. It's a festering crime scene.

Actually, I've lived IN the city of Memphis for 5 years now and found it to be no more "festering" than any other large city, provided you live in the right neighborhood. While Memphis has a bad reputation, the amount of crime in the suburbs is hardly negligible; the difference is that suburb dwellers assume they are safe while city residents usually take precautions to ensure their safety.

While I could list a number of reasons I live inside the I-240 loop, you say you want a small town/rural atmosphere, so you probably don't want to live in the 'burbs of Memphis either, which are hardly rural. On the other hand, Memphis is without question the largest and most important medical center in TN. If you are really willing to commute an hour, you should have no trouble finding a place to live in the countryside outside of Memphis in TN or even northern MS, though the even previously rural areas are seeing a rapid increase in population. If you decide to live in northern MS you can still carry in TN since TN recognizes CCW permits issued by any other state.

I coming down to Tennessee on May 2nd to look for a home. This will be my third time this year. I worked in Michigan for 30 years and retired in Sept. I'm coming home. I'm from Jonesboro/JC area. May check out Erwin and Grey. I think half the tri-city area is populated by my kinfolk.:p
