Went to the range this morning to test some cast bullet 308 loads using large pistol primers. All went well, no pierced primer cups, mild recoil and good grouping. The load I used produced good results previously using CCI #34 primers.

Hornady case
Powder coated Lee 309-180-R bullet with Hornady gas check
CCI #350 large pistol magnum primer
21.0 grains Alliant 2400 powder

I fired 5 shot groups, 100 yards with a Savage model 11.

Overall I consider using large pistol primers and cast bullets a success for my application.

That’s good news. I thought about trying this for my 30-30 cast loads. I use W231 powder so there’s no issue with ignition. The main issue would be if my Marlin 336 would reach them to set them off.

Not bad at all.

Did you happen to get any chrono data?

Haven't ran them through the chronograph yet. This was just to test the functionality of LPP. I'm running low on large rifle primers. I plan to shoot both loads over the chronograph at a later date. For now I know what I'll be using the remainder of my CCI magnum primers on. I've had them for over 20 years. Used them working up a load with Win 296 and 44 mag. I don't use full magnum loads with the 44 anymore.

I wouldn't load any more than a handful to try out. Nothing worse than having to pull a large lot of bullets.

Yea I was thinking getting a single sleeve of LPP and trying them out, maybe even doing the different charge weights. I also use a light charge of H335 with published pressure below 20,000 psi and wonder if it would ignite those too.

I notice the primers are no longer recessed. They are now flush with the rim.
