Testing Home made percussion caps

Thanks for the vid Brushy. I'm looking forward to you testing the homemade tap o cap.
A chlorate mixture would be more reliable than the paper caps and all the ingredients are readily available. You're already making your own powder so the chlorate mixture wouldn't be that big of a step for you. You just have to be a little more careful with it and only mix very small quantities at a time. Good luck.

Thanks for the view! I figured once I got the cap maker Id go ahead and make the plunge and make some for them...although it is nice to know the cheapo caps will work!

Nice vid as usual. I am anciously awaiting the video on the new cap maker. I want one just in case. Ive been beat out so many times on the Bay and GB I quit trying to find one. Cap availability is hit and miss down Tejas way. Also safety match ends carefully crushed and mixed into a alcohol based slurry can be placed into a diy cap with a tiny eye dropper and left to dry. Using that stuff requires a good cleaning of your arms right after use to minimize corrosion. Ditto for the toy caps.

+1

Mixing your own primer compound isn't any more difficult than making BP.

Heck, you could even make your own potassium chlorate, but that is a little more difficult..... kinda like distilling your own alcohol

I umm....do that too! ;) Im just plain ol...crafty

edit: I did notice the roll caps really crud the gun up somethin fierce!

Thanks for the kind words, I do enjoy making the vids. Ive asked for alot of help since I started in the black powder stuff from the folks who knew..there are alot of nice folks here and elsewhere...and there are people who make sport of ignorance of terms and practices..I do it for real folks..like the ones who helped me..thanks to everyone willing to help the new guy...and bite me all the rest! :D brushy

I thought about perchlorate vs roll caps, but self preservation keeps me with the roll caps. I made a living as a lab technician in chemical plants, worked with lots of noxious stuff, never hurt, but hey, I'd like to keep that record. LOL! I do intend to make use of your vids and get into black powder production, got most of the hardware, just haven 't done it.

Thanks for the vids, good for the knowledge of those treading into the unknown. The black powder production vids will, once I get off my lazy duff and try it, be very helpful.

I probably should note that I've been using a tap-o-cap for about 20 years, still got it, still works in my ROA, but my Pietta replicas are not 100 percent. I'm shooting Pyrodex, though, which is harder to ignite, but I've been wanting to get some wire gauge drills to open up the Pietta nipples a bit, think that's the problem. Also, rather than put 4f under the cap, I just put 2 or 3 cap centers in each cap body.

I have had trouble in the past getting commercial powders to ignite in the pan of my flinter where my powder is flawless...screen powder is the perfect beast. Thanks for watching and I hope I helped ya out!
