i got this email a few days ago

Good morning fellow Cougars,

The Texas Legislature is considering Texas House Bill 1893 - Carrying on Campus, which would limit the ability of any public university to restrict licensed handgun owners from carrying concealed handguns on any public university campus within the state of Texas.

Such a bill is relevant to all students at the University of Houston because campus safety and security are top priorities. Therefore we must all engage in this debate and your opinion matters.

The SGA Senate will be debating this issue at its next session on Wednesday, April 29, 2009, at 7:00 p.m. in the UC Underground Mediterranean Room.

To read the bill in question as it would appear in the state legislature log on to;

hmmm well there hasnt really been much debate or public knowledge about it here at SMU... this past week was an Empty Holster Protest as organized nationwide. And the only people who really noticed me with it were the guys i work with (they know me to always have a couple knives on me as well). Then i saw like 2 other guys with them, but thats it. kind of disappointing.

Dokkalfar, I know how you feel. I wore a holster for this week too for SCCC...nobody noticed. I suppose if I had worn a nice piece of leather with a tucked in shirt it would have been more obvious, but alas.

after texas bring it to ohio and indy

yea, well there's no SCCC group at SMU, and i dont really have time to organize it.. worked like 100hrs this week, plus classes have finals coming up in a week or two :(

and i thought i saw somewhere, either TSRA email or on drudgereport that the house had passed 1893. ill check and post if i can find it.
but i did receive this email, so senate is putting it up :)

April 23, 2009 - TSRA Legislative Alert
Dear RICHARD,

On Monday, April 27, the Texas Senate's State Affairs Committee will consider Senate Bill 1164, important TSRA legislation allowing Concealed Handgun Licensees to protect themselves on college and university campuses.

The campuses of higher educational institutions are not "crime-free" zones. ADULT students, ADULT faculty and ADULT employees who have Concealed Handgun Licenses should not be denied their right to defend themselves just because they study, work, or live on a college or university campus! Please contact members of Senate State Affairs Committee, thank the co-authors, and urge all committee members to pass the bill out and protect it from changes not authored by Senator Wentworth.

nope, i was wrong :/ it has passed committee, but has not yet gone to the full house..

Attention TSRA and Texas NRA Members: House Committee Approves NRA-Backed "Campus Personal Protection Act"

On Wednesday afternoon, the House Committee on Public Safety reported out a committee substitute for House Bill 1893, TSRA and NRA-backed legislation sponsored by State Representative Joe Driver (R-113) that would enable Concealed Handgun Licensees to protect themselves on college and university campuses. The bill passed by a 5-3 vote. Voting FOR the bill were State Representatives Driver, Tommy Merritt (R-7), Stephen Frost (D-1), Phil King (R-61) and Tryon Lewis (R-81). Please call and email our supporters on the Public Safety Committee and thank them for voting for HB 1893! Those committee members and their contact information are noted on the slate of State Representatives here.

...

HB 1893 now moves to the House Calendars Committee. This committee decides when, and IF, the bill will come to the floor for a vote by the full House of Representatives. Please call and email members of the House Calendars Committee and urge them to set HB 1893 on the House Calendar for a vote! Let them know that a majority of House members have signed on as co-authors to this bill and it deserves fair consideration by the full House. Those committee members and their contact information are noted on the slate of State Representatives here.

The senate is deciding tomorrow.

I wish I could be in the capital. A bunch of the officials of the SCCC are going to be there. Best wishes to Daniel Crocker and Derek Titus, two friends and fellow SCCC officer.

"Many presidents of private schools in TX have visited their legislators to lobby against the bill."

why?? If it is a private school they have the same right as any other business does to post "Gun Free Zone" signs and keep the evil guns away.

I hope Texas public schools(and the smarter private ones) join schools like mine in not denying rights to students for the sake of being students.

There's a great chance it'll pass, but it needs to be decided upon before may 11th.

Here's a quote from the hearings this past monday...

Sen. Deuell: "How would you defend yourself in a school shooting?"

Keshav: "I would pick something up and throw it."

Sen. Deuell: "Don't bring a coffee pot to a gunfight."

One version of the bill would have taken away the private property exemption for private schools. The hypocritical use 'private property' has a shield to deny gun carrying rights as they are really scared of guns and/or have a liability phobia.

The private property objection for businesses open to the public is pure crap as discussed ad nauseum on the Internet. Some don't get it though.

Dokkalfar,

Do you work on campus, or are you a student? I had mine on that day, but you're right, I didnt see anyone else sporting the empty holster.

Also, last time I checked we do have a SCCC rep for SMU, but I have yet to see anything organized, a flyer, a poster, a table, or anything else.

im a student, and i work on campus, part of the federal work-stud thing. Im one of the AV techs in the Hughes-Trigg Student Center. Though i didnt know we had any SCCC here, there just hasnt been any news about it.

But both bills are close to being finished off, if they arent passed from the calenders committees by May 11th, they will need to be completely refiled and start pretty much from scratch. So everyone feel free to contact members of the respective committees and make sure they get at least one of them through!

Texas: Campus-carry bills are dying!! - THR -

I've made calls...I hope others do the same!!! It would be really sad to see the time, money, and other resources that have been expended on this deal go down the drain.

I am staff here, in the SIC building. I sure hope it passes (and SMU doesnt stand in the way being a private university)

Or, alternatively,

The private property objection for businesses open to the public is pure crap as discussed ad nauseum on the Internet. Some don't get it though.

they subscribe to the idea that property rights must trump all other rights. Which I think is nonsense. but as politics ain't physics, there's no way to prove it.

It's getting voted on by the entire House on monday!!!

YES!!!!!!!!

Thank you everyone who took the time to send support! The house's calendar committee was flooded with hundreds of calls thank to the TSRA, SCCC, and many others.

Cross your fingers and don't back down!

Good luck Neighbors our Blessings are with you. Maybe this will show the way for the rest of us who need this as well.

May 10, 2009 - Campus Personal Protection Act To Be Voted On in the Texas House Next Week
Dear RICHARD,

The 2009 session of the Texas Legislature is a critical one for gun owners and sportsmen! TSRA has been working hard in the LoneStarState to pass landmark legislation protecting an individual's right to self-defense.

House Bill 1893 by State Representative Joe Driver (R-Garland) would allow Concealed Handgun Licensees to protect themselves on the campuses of public colleges and universities. Campus settings are not "crime-free" zones. Adult students, faculty, staff and visitors who are 21 or older, who pass an extensive state and federal criminal records check, and who complete a rigorous handgun training course, should not be denied their right to self-defense simply because they study, live, work on or visit a college or university campus. CHLs have been lawfully carrying handguns for protection virtually everywhere in Texas for more than a dozen years, and there is no statistical data or evidence that they would suddenly transform into irresponsible criminals if legally allowed to enter a college or university setting.

This important self-defense reform needs to pass this year, before the anti-gun extremists in Washington gain momentum that filters down to the state level. Please call and email your State Representatives and urge them to SUPPORT HB 1893 on the House floor and to OPPOSE any amendments not supported by the bill sponsor.
