Gonna be traveling to the great state of Texas to observe my sons graduation from Lackland Basic training,, I have researched all the laws regarding carrying my handgun in and thru all the states I will be passing thru, and staying in.
I am stumped on Texas, though, I have looked around on the DPS website, and other Texas gun-forums,they all have information regarding RESIDENTS and how they may carry, but nothing in regards to a traveler just passing thru/staying for a short time..:banghead:

Does anybody have a link or information regarding visitors who have legal permits in their home-state ??

Because of our $$#$@%! Laws , Minnesota does not recognize Texas permits, therefore Texas apparently does not recognize Minnesota either...:cuss:

I believe that is exactly how it goes.

However, even though Texas does not recognize your CHL, you may legally carry your weapon concealed while in your vehicle. This has nothing to do with you having a permit as your permit has no standing on you carrying a gun in Texas as you stated due to reciprocity. It is due to a law change in 2007.
Here is an excerpt from handgunlaw.us:
Q. Can I carry a handgun without a license when driving or traveling in a Motor Vehicle?
A. Effective September 1, 2007 a person who can legally possess a firearm may possess or carry a handgun
in motor vehicle (including a recreational vehicle with living quarters) and watercraft that is owned by or
under the lawful control of the person. However, the firearm must be concealed, the person may not be
engaged in criminal activity, and also may not be a member of “Criminal Street Gang.” The person may also
carry the firearm to and from his vehicle without a license. (See Texas Penal Code 46.02 (a). However, DPS
recommends that you seek the advice of an attorney with any questions regarding the unlicensed carrying of
firearms.

This might get moved to legal, they might be able to help you a little more over there.

You can always check www.handgulaw.us for questions like this.

From their TX page:

From the Texas DPS FAQ Page:

But yes, you should make sure you don't carry onto the installation.

There is no reciprocal agreement with Minnesota, so I'd say you can't carry concealed on your person.
However, and this is just my opinion, there would be no problem with having your pistol in the car while traveling or where you are staying.

We don't get too up tight about folks having guns.:)

Sorry, been awhile since I've visited, I cruised right-past the "legal" forum part,
I knew there was a section for stuff like this,,

I know I cannot carry on-Base,, do I need to lock it up back in hotel safe ?
Or can it be secured in compartment inside vehicle, unloaded ??

Mods,Please move this thread if needed

Thanks Sam, that was the website I was using,
It mentions traveling with weapons, but the rest of that section on the site deals
with resident-questions, which led me to believe that visitors may have different rules.
Just having it accessible in car is good for me,
I'll feel safe enough with y'all carrying yours lawfully

On a side note,Im sure you guys might have seen it,but the last-page of that website, lists all the changes in handgun laws since 2009 or so,
I cant believe the mess !!
I mean you look at that list and 1-state drops another state in recognizing their laws,so in turn that state drops the others state,, THEN sometimes 1-DAY later they re-recognize the previous states laws.. then a couple weeks later they are right back where they started from originally...
Reminds me of a couple 6-year olds fighting in the sandbox !!

No wonder why congress cant pass any laws , when they spend all their time un-doing and re-doing what they just did.... My head hurts....

Yup, and who knows what they are bickering over.....but, oh well.....

I don't know the answer to your question about locking your firearm up when on base or leaving it in the hotel or not; but I hope someone comes along soon to assist! Best of luck!

And a congratulations to you and your son are in order, a proud father I am sure!

Thank you, Im all full of proud right now

I'll check back here later, I was gonna contact the base about weapons and HOW they must be transported,, But I dont want them looking for me when I pull up to the gate...

I think I will leave it at the hotel, just in case

IMHO/IANAL/AFAIK, don't even think about bringing that gun on-base....

Unless you're a criminal....

(Those signs work so well....)

Enjoy the trip!

TX does recognize non-resident licenses from quite a few states, and you may be able to get one of those in time - might be a good idea. It'll cost, though....

(You probably could get a TX non-resident license, btw. Can't say about the details. I have a PA non-resident, which is good in TX, but you now have to apply in person. Might be a tad out of the way....)

Regards,

Do not lock your gun in your car and try to drive on base. While on Lackland, you are subject to search at anytime. If they find your gun, your in deep kimchi.

Not sure about locking your gun in hotel safe, less you have one in your room.

Stay cool. Hotter than hXXX right now.

Just IMHO, a hotel desk's safe probably has a better chance of being reasonably theft-proof than one in your room. The latter probably can be opened by the janitor. The front desk should have some kind of surveillance, or at least be receipted.

'Course, you want to package it so it doesn't seem to be a gun :D....

(If I was running a hotel, I'd want room safes that could be easily opened should the guest forget the combination. And you know that's going to happen regularly....)

I stayed in a cheap motel in the Rochester area six or seven years ago with an in-room safe. Pretty sure that the safe had a backup key lock....

The room also had those electronic keys. However, the desk clerk screwed up, and my keys wouldn't work after the wife and I hauled our stuff up to the second floor. No elevator, of course. So, I went back downstairs and got replacements. New clerk didn't "set" the keys for a two-day stay, and after lunch the next day, the card wouldn't even open the side door near our room.... One more trip to the office, all the way around the building. No restaurant in the hotel, of course.

My Brother-In-Law, who's cheaper than Jack Benny, booked the room for us. Really not bad otherwise, but tiny.... 'Bout the same as another one he booked for me about 1990. You'd think I'd learn.... :D

That said, it cost more to board the dog than our hotel stay. We did have a bigger room, though :D....

The other hotel had paper-thin walls. First night, some guy in an adjacent room was hacking up a lung. Next night, new guests, and a loud party until I got upset enough to call the desk.

The ride to that Rochester hotel, btw, was insane. My wife, her mother, and her mother's sister. Lucy, Ethel, and Ethel, if you remember the old TV series.... I was tempted to leave them at a service plaza, but there probably are laws against that. Being New York, too, I didn't have the means of threatening them.... The good news? The BIL & his family moved back to FL....

Regards,

Thanks, guys
Im gonna bring my own single-pistol security box,and leave in hotel safe behind desk,
(I never trust ANYTHING in the room)

I see the forecast for this week is 100,,, awesome................. hope you guys dont have the 70-degree dewpoints like we have up here,, could be ugly....
