hey all! Got orders to TEXAS! :D FINALLY!

Thats right moving out of the DC beltway, moving a little town called SAn Angelo.

So here's my question. How much land do I have to have to be able to shoot on?

Can Any Texans weigh in?

State forbids the counties to regulate hunting on unicorporated private land over ten acres. Some counties regulate smaller plots, some don't ... but 10 acres is the minimum statewide.

Only a very few counties forbid shooting on 10 acres or less. Harris County (Houston) and I believe it's Bandera County where Tarpley is located. There may be others, but I haven't bothered to look.

Otherwise? If you're not in a town/city with a no-shooting ordinance, if it's safe to shoot, go shoot.

In my rural area, I once had somebody file a disturbance complaint against my shooting, because of the noise. The JP shrugged and pointed out that target practice was a perfectly legal activity and refused to accept the charge.

Awesome!

Yeah i was trying to find a place outside of town if possible in Tom Green county.

The idea of having a lane off my back porch seemed just too good to pass up.

Double Naught,
I was thinking of 270 degree berms approx 20ft high or so. but again I wanted to know I was on the right side of the law before selecting a house/land and hiring a dude with a tractor/dozer to make my berms.

Wow, that sounds great and especially so for a smaller property!

Maybe you can find a piece of property outside of town with one of those little mini mountains (monadnocks) and have a natural and amazing backstop.

It doesn't take a really large backstop to be safe--assuming that you're careful about your shooting. I've had no problems with a mound of dirt and gravel some four feet high, wide and deep. I set the target at ground level. Benchrest on the front porch, backstop at 100 yards. Been doing just fine for right at thirty years, now.

From DC to San Angelo.....that could be the basis for a good book. LOL!! Enjoy!!

I'm in San Angelo. Great gun club just outside of city limits called the San Angelo Gun Club. Membership dues are $80 a year, I think $65 for military and seniors. You attend a one time new member meeting and they give you a key to come and go as you please. It's outdoors and an excellent range with very friendly people. http://www.sanangelogunclub.org/

As for San Angelo, I would say it's about as opposite to DC as you can get in the good ol' USA!

*Correction, it's $40 for LEO/Active Military. You can't beat that!

Yes, but people are notoriously not careful 100% of the time. Small property and a small backstop is a potential recipe for disaster, certainly for breaking the law by shooting across property lines.

Wanted to eventually teach my daughters riflry. So yeah bigger backstop and if possible nothing for a long distance. San anggelo gc sounds. Like a greatdeal! I'll have to look that up.

Welcome to Texas!

I assure you, people here can be much friendlier than those that I met in DC (and I don't just mean that in terms of guns ;))

My grandfather has a farm of about 70 acres, and directly across from his front gate is a growing community of lake houses. One season when we were dove hunting someone called in to 911 that there were people firing randomly into the air :scrutiny: (but seriously, nothing was falling so that was a legitimate statement). Anyhow, the county sheriff arrived and told us to stop wasting ammo and causing problems.....and start hitting what we aim at and get dinner :D

In Ohio, old tires are free and rocks are free so I got old tires, wired them together, filled them with rocks and they make fine, wide, tall backstops for shooting.
