A year or more ago I asked for opinions regarding center fire rifle loads that would be suitable for kids and hunting/target shooting. My thoughts at that time were focused on a center fire bolt gun in either .243 or 7mm-08. I had yet to purchase the gun.

During the course of that thread someone, Inebriated I think, suggested that I consider building an AR in 300 BLK. Well, one thing led to another and I did decide to go the AR build route but chose 6.8 SPC as the base round. This would be my first entry into the AR world.

What a pleasure this has been. The gun is finished now and I am in the process of beginning load development. The rifle shoots like dream, weighs an even 7 #s with loaded magazine and iron sights. My grandkids can easily handle it but they have to wait in line behind me. This thing is fun...and very accurate!

Thanks to THR and those who are willing to offer advice. Sometimes it leads in a direction that you didn't intend to go.

.
A 7-lb semi-auto! rifle, loaded, in a caliber suitable for medium-sized game to 300 yds?

WIN.

Congrats!

Nothing like drunk parts buying. I've got a spare Hornady single stage press because of a few extra beers. Reminds me of the time I sent my house payment to the water district.

The THR member who recommended the AR build uses the screen name Inebriated. I didn't mean to imply that he was. ;)

Funny though...

Nothing too remarkable about an unadorned AR, but here it is.

And a few specs...

Aero Precision upper and lower
ARP 16", 6.8mm, 1-11.25 twist barrel, Scout profile
JAL linear muzzle device
Magpul grip, bolt release, folding front and rear sights, trigger guard
VLTOR receiver extension tube
B5 stock
Geissele SSA trigger
ALG free float tube
KNS pins
PRI magazines

Very glad you and the kids like it! Now see if you can get their parents to give it a try!

The AR15 is just a fun gun to shoot, but the fact you can build it virtually anyway you want is just that much better. Too many still refuse to even give them a try because they are "weird", "military", or "not blued steel and wood".

Amazing, that build is very similar to the 6.8 SPCII AR build that I have been getting a parts list together. Same upper, lower, trigger, handguard, stock, grip and magazines. It has the same simple and practical beauty I was hoping it would. I've had a hard time deciding between the G2S, SSA and SSA-E. Whichever I chose it'll probably end up in both the Aero Precision .308 AR build I'm currently working on. Any experience with the other Geissele triggers mentioned above for comparison?

To answer your question, no I don't have any experience with other Geissele triggers. I made my choice based on some conversations with others and a call to the good folks at Geissele.

I can tell you that I do like it. For a hunting trigger it's not too light but breaks beautifully.
