Back in April I started a thread that can be found here :

http://www.thehighroad.org/showthread.php?t=195700

If you were to go through and read it you would find me writing about recieving a shotgun from my grandmother for my 21st birthday and reciving support from my family for owning guns. You will also see that I was wresting with having 2 20 guage shotguns and trying to decide if I should sell one and use the $200 to put towards my first hand gun. One THR member suggested that is 20 members each chipped in $10 I would have the $200 and both shotguns. Many of the wonderful members here did just that and gave me a wonderful birthday present. Today I was able to use my THR birthday gift and get my first Handgun.

I saved over the summer and after buying books etc for the new school year I had enough for a used Smith & Wesson 30-2 that my gun mentor Only1asterisk helped me find and procure. It was recived by the FFL on friday and taken to the range by Only1asterisk and myself today. Thus followes the RAnge report:

We took it apart at the range and gave it a quick cleaning . We then proceeded to put about 100 rounds of three different ammo's through it. We took three flavors of Winchester Whitebox 115 FMJ, 115 JHP and 147 JHP. All three fed perfectly and had no problems with any of the three. I need to get some heavier 9mm loads to feed through and see what it likes and doesn't but it seemed to have no problem with those three.

The grips on it are a little thicker than any I've ever seen on a 39-2 and will need to be changed eventualy to make the fit even better but as it stands I'd say it fits my hand at about 90%. After we left the range (we only had 30 minutes of range time but...hey that's 30 minutes of range time with my new toy:cool: ) We took the gun apart and gave it a good cleaning and inspection. tHe more we cleaned the better this gun looked. SOme of the things we initialy thought were wrong proved to be perfectly fine. The barrel was originaly so full of grease etc that we thought there was little to no rifiling left. After a bore brush, some Hoppes #9 and a patch or two went through it it had some beautiful rifiling in it.

We unfortunately forgot the camera so I don't have any pictures...yet. But I will try and get some taken and posted in the next few days...I smell another range trip in my near future.

But I could write for pages about my new gun becaus eI am so excited about my first handgun. The primary purpose of this post was and remains this. I want to say a big

THANK YOU !!!

To all the THR members who contributed back in April. This is by far the best birthday present I have gotten in my memory. It would have been another six months to a year before I could afford a handgun on my own. THank you all. I promise that once I am out of college and finincialy stable to pass it on. You all have been a very welcoming and friendly group of people from whome I have learned much over the past year.

I'm going to begin passing it on by taking my sister to the range when I visit her in November. Once agin...THank you THR members and I will get pictures added as soon as I can.:D

Congratulations on your new handgun. That was an awesome story. There are truly some great people at THR. Enjoy your new gun and great shooting.

congrats, on your new gun, now go shoot the crap out of it,and let us know if you need anything in the future!

It’s a pity we didn't take any before pictures. I was afraid the bore might be a complete waste when I first saw it, it was that filled with crud. It is still not clean, but at least it shows good strong rifling. The barrel mating surfaces are sharp and clean. Lockup is tight. The gun has some character for certain (I'd really like to know what bent the lanyard ring out of shape), but I think she did well. Next trip to the range we'll run a better assortment of ammo though it and see how it handles wide mouth hollow points.

The grips are far thicker than any model 39 I've ever seen. We'll get some pictures up, but it still needs a bit more cleaning.

Thanks again to those that helped,

David

Grips for your Mdl 39

Congrats MedGrl! The Model 39 is one of my two favorite pistols (yes, the other is the ol' 1911 :D ).

BTW, I have (I think) 3 sets of grips for a 39 - two are stock S&W and one is Pachmayer rubber - you are welcome to take all of them and see which set works the best. I have found that S&W did vary the thickness of their grips over the years, which is how I came by the grip collection!

Your welcome... lol jk. Congrats.

Off topic question: MedGrl, I've seen your threads but never thought to ask this... does the MED part of your name relate to medicine? If so, how so? I'm an EMT by day and hospital security by night.

Now back to the regularly scheduled thread.

-Dev

P.S. Waiting impatiently for them pics. :)

Gunsmith:

Thank you. My sister and I had talked about learning to shoot together for a time and then I started working with Only1asterisk and he offered a trip to the range. After I told her that I was learning I promised to teach her when I got my first handgun. Paying it foward should be fun. Our next siters only day is going to be at a range...that is so AWSOME!

NineseveN:

Yes. Things did work out...very nicely at that too. Thank you.

possum:

Yes sir *salutes* Thanks and I'll be sure to post about any updates/fixes I make to the gun...and add picks in too.

statelineblues:

I've sent you a PM.

xd9fan:

I agree. It would be a much better world indeed if more people thought like possum. I'm glad to have good news like this to start a thread on. and THR members made it possible.

again...Thanks to everyone.

You know, you're one of the only people that's ever bothered to actually capitalize the last N in my name. :)

Now go shoot some more! :D :D

MedGrl,

Sounds like you're on the way. Be safe and a credit to us all. Teach your sister well. Can you get a carry permit where you live?

Don't neglect the shotguns.

Time to start thinking about the first rifle...

What about reloading?:D You can save a bunch of money.

(That's a lie. You spend just as much as you would buying factory ammo...you're just able to shoot more.)

Byron Quick:

I always keep the 4 rules in mind and I have already warned my sister to expect a saftey lecture and thet she won't touch a gun until I'm sure she knows the 4 rules.

The shotguns will not be neglected. Only1asterisk and I are contemplating a trap shooting expedition.

As for reloading...Only1asterisk and I have already started discussing how to get that started.

A rifle is going to have to wait for a bit.

I am starting procedures for a CHL. I'll try and be a credit to the good examples here on THR.

The last user of this particular 39-2 kept it very well lubed. That lube collected dust and the 2 merged into some unholy amalgamation that I spend another hour removing from the gun’s innards today. Then I took the grips off. I and discovered a pair of giant dust bunnies, each the size of .32 S&W brass, one on either side of the mainspring. I think the gun has sat in an armory for a long, long time. I took some pictures, but most turned out too dark. I’ll post some in the morning. It really isn’t a bad looking little gun with nickel (I thought it was nickel, but now that it is really clean, I don’t know) or chrome on the slide, blued small parts and clear matte anodized frame.

You spend just as much as you would buying factory ammo...you're just able to shoot more.

So true! But that is the goal.

For now may have to work out some arrangement where I buy the supplies and she provides the labor. There are 2-3 other people here in her situation that might split the cost on some equipment to share. The price you pay a box of 9mm has gone up to the point where makes more sense to reload than it did a couple of years ago esp. if you are a cash poor student with time to spare.

Seems to me that slide stop pin is protruding awfully far out on the right side of the gun - could it be from a later model? But definately a sweet 39!

The slide stop is indeed almost 1/8" proud on the offside. I wonder if it wasn't inadvertently swapped for one from another gun I hadn't noticed before you said something. Most of the time that it has spent in my hands it's been in pieces.

That's maddd coo. Yo I want a shotgun to!

Anyway I say give the other shoty to your sister, but not until she takes a few shots with it having decent accuracy. Also be sure to make her clean it to.
