S&W Model 28, 4 inch barrel. It's what I have.
I think a 2 3/4" or 3" Speed Six 357 which has fixed sights and round butt would be pretty close to the 3" fixed sight 681 you mentioned. As kind of a fun thought experiment I've asked myself what would I pick for the one handgun that would best fit any possible need, and I've also thought that a 681 would be what I'd pick (I wish that S&W had used the 681 as the basis for the Customs CS-1 model—a fixed-sighted 3" 681 would be a cool gun). Of my current .357 handguns, though, I would pick my 4" GP100. Sturdy, accurate and with my favourite factory revolver grips ever.

If I get another .357, it will be one of these, a Ruger LCRx. I saw a Security Six on sale for $800 or something, which is nuts.
If I could only have "One Go-To" .357 then it would be my S&W Model 686-no dash. Besides being a solid, well built gun, it has the sweetest DA/SA trigger on it right out of the box!

686, 'nuff said.
Shooting what in it?
I agree. I carried one as my State of NJ issued sidearm for years.Smith and Wesson Model 66 4”. Could not think of too many situations I would feel lacking. I have a 6” also but it doesn’t make a decent carry gun, great at the range and great in the field but not easy to hide.
The OP could have qualified that it should be a gun in which we actually shoot .357 Magnum. The original post engenders a whole series of potential scenarios. Of what I have, a 4" Stainless Security Six seems the best choice. The imagination sends me in a quest for 6" 686 or Gp100 that I don't have.....but the original post is well crafted to let us imagine all sorts of scenarios. When I consider which 357 mag I ACTUALLY do go to for "rough use" it is a 2" LCR.
Or....38+Ps in itThe 19/66 with 2.5” barrel carries well but doesn’t handle 357 Magnum in a way that I like. I really think 4” is best for carry, shooting and good terminal ballistics.
