WASHINGTON - U.S. Representative Mike Ross has sent a letter to the National Rifle Association asking the group to hold its 2007 convention in Arkansas. The gun-rights group has rebuked an invitation from Columbus, Ohio.

The NRA dropped the Ohio city as its national convention host because of Columbus' new assault weapons ban. The Democrat from Arkansas wants to fill the void and wrote a letter to NRA Executive Vice President Wayne LaPierre.

Ross says in the letter that the state of Arkansas and its residents have long been known for their support of the NRA and the Second Amendment. He says the support is evident by the fact that close to 100,000 residents of Arkansas applied for a hunting or fishing license just last year.
