Okay, I see that now. I searched the thread for "Windham" and got nothing. I guess I suck at searching, I see it back on the first page now. :banghead:
No worries, are they a new company or owned by one of the other companies I wonder?

Accuracy IN GENERAL is one factor in my decision.

So when determining which AR to buy, considering that home defense is an intended use, what are the other factors that go into your decision or recommendation?

Keep in mind that the OP said:

"I'm talking accuracy, reliability, durability, and overall bulid quality/fit and finish."

After searching for a 20" upper for about a month Palmetto State Armory was the winner. I was looking at BCM first, they didn't have anything in stock the whole time. Not only that but their prices had significantly jumped since I last looked at them. Being a good company will swell your head and your prices like nothing else. I was going to go with them because of their Mil-speciness (sorry, for lack of a better word). I looked at PK firearms but they excluded themselves with Rock River parts (not a bash). I wanted mil-spec and nothing else. Rock River had ruled themselves out.

I already had 2 Bushmasters, I was not particulary impressed, (again, not a bash) but still have them. Again not mil-spec. Stag has also went up far to much, good guns but unless I switch to being a lefty not for me. Palmetto State Armory was the ticket. They haven't been around long enough to swell up. They use mil-spec parts. The barrels are FN (mine is a FN marked 20") M16 barrels. Order the lower for $239 and the M4A1 Premium Upper for $477.94. That is $716.94 with free shipping for a full mil-spec AR! That leaves you $283.06 for ammo or optics. That price is hard to beat, maybe even impossible by any other company! I hope you find what you want, just remember a pic or two for all of us here.

If my only use was home defense i wouldnt buy a AR period...but if i was going to buy or build a rifle for 1000 and accuracy wasnt the top of the list in order i would choose DD..RRA elite tactical..BCM..colt..if i wanted under 800 in order S&W...PSA...windham(the real bushmaster)...stag.... dpms panther...if i was going to battle...give me the 338 lapua..i would do good running around...i would also like to add does this 1000 bucks include optics...if not u need to be looking in the under 800 range..we are all intitled to our opinion thers no reason to bash mr mustards opinion on the colt..he obviously had a bad expierence with it ..i have to ...but i refuse to believe colts is better when i know friends in the military who have personally had issues in iraq with there weapon..**** happens

Good thing that didn't happen, eh? :)

I think it is an erroneous assumption to equate "home defense" with the need for a military grade weapon.

It is almost a certainty that a HD will never be fired in that role. If it is it will probably not be more than a few rounds. It will most likely live a sheltered life, seldom handled, and when handled done so with care.

A commercial gun of non-tested parts and "inferior" metals such as a Winchester 94 or Remington 700 bolt gun, a Mossberg shotgun, or even a 10/22 would serve perfectly adequately for most most people in a HD role.

Military grade weapons are tough due the abuse soldiers put them through under field conditions. They are the 24/7 tool of a trade. Being frequently handled, disassembled, reassembled, and many times maintained incorrectly. They are fired to high round counts and see plenty of rapid fire. This is a completely different set of needs beyond those for typical HD use.

Saying that, I don't promote buying crap. And a milspec gun should be more reliable and more durable than a common commercial grade gun. But everything in a trade off.

For example I shoot a lot and compete with my rifles. I like a RRA 2-stage NM trigger. Even if it may not be a good choice for military service, it doesn't mean that the increased performance in trade for decreased service life isn't a comprise that I shouldn't be willing to make. I have no qualms with using that trigger in a HD gun. If it losses its first stage I will put in a new one and continue to enjoy a great trigger break. No big deal.

I own 4 BCMs and a few RRAs. I have owned Colt, a couple of BMs, a CMMG, and about 14 or 15 RRAs. My "things are breaking bad" gun is a Gov profile barreled BCM, but it is last on list for general or match shooting. It just isn't near as accurate as my RRAs, and milspec AR triggers are just rediculous for anything other than duty use. Plus the generous chambers in the BCMs stretch my brass more than necessary.

Point is if I had to only have one AR, it wouldn't be a milspec gun... the reason is simple - it WILL be used to shoot recreationally, regularly, and will most likely NEVER be used in a defensive shooting. If it was, the chances of it failing catastrophically during the few rounds necessary at that very moment are almost nil. With those odds combined with the fact I take good care of my stuff I would be willing to risk a reliable nicer gun for HD v a milspec gun.

The right gun totally depends on the user's preferences and priorities.

I'm completely satisfied with the PSA I went with. The components seem more than adequate for plinking and HD, my reasons for it. Nearing 1k round count since purchasing it a few months ago with nary a hiccup.

Anytime that the topic of 'which AR' comes up there is somebody that is going to think that they are the top notch, operator, swat, navy seal, green beret, ranger, end all, be all about this gun. If you don't like what they like, then you are stupid. They have to type down some arrogant remarks, I guess, to make themselves feel better. When someone says get this one because I had a bad experience with this other one, it makes me wonder if that person didn't ask any questions before hand or did they not listen to the previous 'Pro'. I personally could care less. I have a DPMS that I shoot in NRA Highpower and it shoots excellent. For HD I have a Colt 6920 and it is a fine piece of equipment. Sometimes when these 'Pros' start commenting and putting people down, I picture a 17 year old video game turd sitting in his momma's house typing all his training and experiences down. Which I feel happens alot.

God, could you colt vs. the world people put away your e-penises and shut up unless you can actually articulate the functional and material differences between the colt and the things you think are worse?

And no, whipping out "the chart" doesn't cut it unless you can tell why any of the criteria on it might actually matter.

I started deleted some posts for language and insults, but the more I read, the more I felt like the best thing to do was close the thread.

I hope the OP got some good feedback before the quarreling and insults began.

He can always give it another try.
