It started like this - my wife has a Smith 642 and I have a P-3AT for hot weather carry (i.e. all the time here in Phoenix). Wifey decides that she wants a super slim carry piece for the binder she carries around all day (she's a Realtor) because she won't be carrying her purse. So much to my annoyance, she gives me the 642 and takes my cute little chrome over blue P-3AT and announces that I'll just have to make do. "Take the P32" she added, I didn't tell her to take the P32, marriage being the delicate balance that it is.

So I start wearing shorts with roomier pockets, get used to the slightly bulkier 642 and shazam! - Suddenly all those nightmares about .380ACP bouncing off leather jackets just disappear, now I feel like I have a gun with genuine stopping power.

I picked up a cheap pocket holster, some 135 grain +P Gold Dots, and I'm just as happy as a Clam.

Thought I'd share an insight into the kind of tough gun trading that goes on in a marriage where you both carry.

Newton, welcome to the 642 club.Which "cheap" pocket holster did you decide on? I have a Galco and it works fine for me.tom.

So, if you're more at ease with a .38, how do you feel abt her new caliber choice? My wife's primarily a P32 toter, but the way while I choose the 642.

Can you guys suggest a larger grip for the 642? Or slip over addition. My wife and I both carry the 642 and it has suggested we go for larger grips. Sorry I jumped in here but it looked like the perfect time.

rcm,

Crimson Trace makes lasergrips for many handguns, including the 642. The LG-205 and the LG-305 both fit the 642. Looks like the 305 is a slightly larger set of grips than the 205.

S&W sells a version of the 642 with Crimson Trace grips pre-installed, so apparently S&W thinks they're good enough.
