What would happen if you shined it up, then did a hard chrome from Mahovsky's?

I dont know if you can hard chrome a stainless steel gun. The nice thing about stainless is you can always touch up the polish if you want.

Thanks...and yes you can hard chrome a stainless gun. Why most people would want to do it is another thing, but if someone had a stainless Python, one might want to put a nice finish on it, then hard chrome it. One weakness the Python has is that its pawl/hand is too small at the top and it wears quickly, throwing the gun out of time. People who have their guns chromed pretty much see a virtual cessation in wear. Thus, if the pawl and the ratchet were chromed, Pythons could shoot tens of thousands of rounds through their guns without wear.

Whether hard chroming can slow down the leeching of chromium from forcing cones I don't know. But as Grandma always used to say, "It wouldn't hurt!"
