The 686

I recently purchased a 686 and put Crimson Trace laser grips on it! I am happy
If it's a 3" or less, that's what I'd call one of the ultimate personal defense carries when size matters but weight doesn't.

Found this 686-4 + for 199.00 in a pawnshop last year :)
I wasn't really in the market for one but at that price I couldn't help myself
Glad I did as it has become one of my favorites and the one that goes in and out of the house everyday to the truck, while the rest stay in the safe....

I have a 4" 686+. The best revolver I've ever had. Very easy to shoot and accurate. I traded my snubby 686 a while ago and replaced it with a S&W 386 and regret it. I think I prefer the weight of a stainless gun. The 386 is the same size and shape as the 686 (roughly) but it ust does not feel right in my hand. I'll probably end up selling the 386 to fund another 686 snubby.

I love my 686+. A joy to handle and shoot and ogle :what: My only minor complaint: the stock grips don't quite fit my hand as well as I'd like--I really need to seek out an alternative--and their open backstrap allows sweat/moisture to creep in under the grip and start to rust the frame there. (I learned that the hard way when I took the grip off for the first time and found some little rust specks--fortunately thew were easy to remove.)

Ammo choices

I'm new to reloading and wonder if it would be better to shoot a lite load 357 than a 38 standard. I keep hearing that excessive use of 38 spcl will lead up the gun.

I like LSWC or Lead Flat point. Anyone else have experince with this. What loads to you use.
Thanks
Joe

This is my first (only) handgun. I had my heart set on a 686, but a buddy made me an offer I couldn't refuse on this 586. I love it so far.

You may not know it yet but....You will be happy you got your hands on the 586. I suspect you will end up with a 686 anyway at some point. They are in high(er) demand the 586. Stainless are a dime a dozen so to speak. Very cool.

Great first handgun and congratulations and welcome.

The 586 L Comp is the worst CCW you could ever find or plan to carry. Please contact me immediately to relieve you of your burden hence you may find something (I don't care what it is) more suitable.
Then really....That is my favorite 86 of all time. Did you buy it new? Where did you come by it? I hope you paid $1100 for it because I really don't want to know that you found it in a retired preachers attic and his wife of 97 was cleaning things out and she wanted to get rid of the dastardly fire stick. ;)
Lucky dog. Let me know if you ever wish to divest yourself from it.
And no I DON'T want to know how it shoots. :neener:

i was interested in that gun, but found one local.

here it is,

a 686 no dash CS-1 3" round butt
can anyone tell me what kind of grips are on the 686 and 1006? is it rosewood, cocobolo, tulipwood, etc. I purchased the guns used and dont know much about the wood. I would love to get a matching pair.

many thanks

686 Cs-1

I don't see my original 686 post. Photobucket deleted all my pics a month or so ago, perhaps there was no longer a reference. Just want to maintain my membership status.

Mid 80s 686 no dash CS-1 3 inch (US Customs Service) bead-blast finish with the 2 M mark.

Janet Reno had 1500 of 3000 destroyed,,,weep, wail. :banghead::(

If you run into one grab it quick. They sell for up to $1200 depending on condition.

My first handgun, purchased used in Feb this year, and I have been completely addicted to shooting it. I put over 4000 rds through it, and it never gets old. My wife accuses me of having an unhealthy relationship with it when she sees me spend 2 hours cleaning it twice a week. I think the cure is to buy her a nice wheelgun :D

Of all of the revolvers I have owned, the finest has been my 686-4. It has been absolutely reliable and precisely accurate.

It has wonderful balance and fits my hands as if it was especially fashioned for them.

S&W has truley made a remarkable revolver.,

I bought a 686-5 in 4" just yesterday and already love it. There's a little honest wear on it and when I shot it, the .357's didn't seat properly. My feeling is that a lot of .38's were shot through it and I have a little build up in the chambers. The only thing that bugs me is the grips. They feel thin to me in the hand and I would like to replace them with something a little chunkier. Maybe some checkered coco-bolos or stock target grips. I've looked around on the web and found lots of options but wanted opinions from folks who have actually replaced the grips before buying. Gonna take a little mother's and polish it up and see about getting the fouling out of it. I'll post some pics later.
