The ban must stand
By Douglas MacKinnon
Originally published September 8, 2003

TO A LARGE EXTENT, hypocrisy is the coin of the realm in politics. "Do what I say and not what I do" is often the thought of the day in our nation's capital, from both sides of the aisle.

With a wink and a nod to special interest groups, some lawmakers and some administrations can betray the trust of the American people. Such betrayals take place because of campaign contributions, out of fear of the special interest group or as a favor to friends. Whatever the reason, the result is detrimental to the vast majority of taxpayers.

As a Republican, I fear some in my party (and some Democrats) may soon betray that trust in a way that could result in the loss of life of law enforcement officers, innocent civilians or even our troops overseas.

This trust will be betrayed if Congress fails to renew the federal ban on semiautomatic assault-style weapons. The ban went into effect in 1994 and made it illegal to manufacture, transfer or possess 19 specific types of semiautomatic weapons. It also banned ammunition magazines that hold more than 10 rounds.

If members of Congress don't renew the ban, it will be out of fear and because of the lobbying of the National Rifle Association. The NRA is always worried about sliding down the "slippery slope" of legislation, so its knee-jerk reaction is to fight any ban on any weapon. Even weapons such as these assault weapons, which have absolutely no place in civilized society.

Before I am tarred and feathered, let me be clear about this: I am strongly in favor of Americans having the right to bear arms. I support the Second Amendment. What I don't support, and in fact what I find disgusting, is any attempt to weaken or let expire the ban on these weapons of mass death and mass misery.

Those of us in the GOP rightfully take the moral high ground when we warn that special interest groups such as teachers unions and trial lawyers are, respectively, sabotaging the futures of our young and shutting down viable businesses and creating massive unemployment. We are right to point the finger at certain Democrats and say, "You are doing the bidding of these special interests, and you are wrong."

But when these same Democrats and some in the media point the finger at Republicans and say, "You are doing the bidding of the NRA to keep assault weapons on the street," the hypocrisy can and does flow freely.

Those in either party who defend these weapons of evil, either with their outright support or by omission, should be ashamed of themselves. Make no mistake, these semiautomatic assault weapons were designed to slaughter human beings. They are the weapon of choice of drug cartels, gangs and even terrorists, and for the good of our nation they must be eliminated from the streets.

I find it disturbing that some in the GOP - the party of law and order - would not want to renew the ban on a class of weapons that every major law enforcement organization in our nation wants banned. Do the voices of those brave enough to wear the badge no longer carry weight in the halls of Congress?

The ultimate irony in all of this is that in Washington, members of Congress and their staffs were recently terrorized by the unknown and unseen D.C. sniper, who was calmly killing and maiming innocent men, women and children. If the horrific memory of those days does not make a decision clear on renewing the ban on assault weapons, then sadly nothing will.

As a civilized nation, we must not only renew the ban on these weapons but in fact strengthen it. To knowingly do otherwise would be to knowingly condemn the innocent to death.

Those same organizations also seem to want the same rifles in the trunk of every patrol car on the road.

And lying seems to be the coin of the realm in newspaper columns.

He probably doesn't even think about it, but he automatically assigns iron-clad credibility to those 'major law enforcement organizations,' like if they support it, well golly, it MUST be right then.

I'm sure that many major law enforcement organizations in the crime-infested big cities would love to see ALL guns banned, so I really don't see his point.

Ole' Dougy must think that if the AW Ban is renewed, or a replacement bill is passed, all the drug dealers, gang members and terrorists will turn their assault weapons in and we will all be much safer.
I believe him, since he makes perfect sense.

Amazing! Someone who can talk out of both sides of his...posterior...at once! Oh wait, he works for Dole; he has a good teacher.

Using the word scumbag to refer to an American citizen who happens not to agree with you is the type of name calling that leftists are famous for, its not the high road for sure.

...these semiautomatic assault weapons were designed to slaughter human beings.

Yeah, many of those firearms are target rifles designed to put holes in paper. Anyway, I think you're missing the point if you don't think us citizens of the US should have guns designed to kill humans. That's the point of the 2nd. To defend ourselves with effective weapons from other humans who seek to hurt/kill/maim/rape/conquer/etc. us.

I am strongly in favor of Americans having the right to bear arms. I support the Second Amendment.

No, you aren't. No, you don't.

Wild the only reason we are calling this moronic SOB scumbag is because this is the high road. I wouldn't mind giving him a few toothpicks a whole two by four at a time. He is of absolutely no relevance but the media panders to him. You never see 'Joe average working stiff" quoted with whole stories, especially not twice.

Wildalaska - Would you prefer "petty would-be tyrant"?

Actually..yes...it surely sounds...how shall I say this...far more erudite than an epithet more suited to the street....

Notice how the word mirrors the epithets used by the writer of the silly writer of the gun control piece....sinking low we are, yes?

Having read the article, allow me to weigh in on the "scumbag" controversy: I think "statist, anti-liberty, small minded, irrational, pandering, intellectually bankrupt, truth-challenged, anti-Constitution bigot" is more appropriate. I was going to go with "imbecile", but thought that was unfair to genuinely mentally challenged people, who as a group demonstrate far more human dignity than this worthless pile of bureaucratic garbage.

And it's an insult to bags of scum everywhere.

This is a typical raving from someone who knows only the surface appearance of the issue.

1. There is convincing evidence that the AWB and mag limits have had NO effect on any crime indicator.

2. The DOJ have proven that there is complete substitution of equivalent weapons such that the 19 banned guns are easily replaced by available weapons without meaningless features.

3. The country is awash with hicap mags for "assault rifles" at reasonable prices. Only Glock mags will screw you.

4. The average number of shots fired in a crime has not changed.

So there are only two reasonable positions:

1. Argued by DOJ researchers - the ban must be continued and expanded.
2. Drop the ban. (We have a winner! )

However, GWB is in favor of the ban because he cannot move beyond the surface appearance of the ban.

The piece is that from an elitis, statist republican who truly doesn't understand the need for the 2nd Amendment and furthermore is too damn stupid actually to know the facts.

He is obviously not interested in facts, since he believes eliminating "assault rifles" would prevent another DC sniper scenario. In how many of the sniper's murders did he fire more than one shot?
