AWB will sunset.

GOP will not allow vote to happen.

It's over!

Time to rejoice.

Even you naysayers who predicted gloom and doom, who predicted an even worse ban replacing the dying AWB......even all you mully-grubbing sour, pessimists....you can rejoice, too........

After you have a big old slice of crow, first.

But REJOICE!

GOP: Congress Won't Vote on Weapons Ban

Wed Sep 8,11:52 PM ET Add Politics - U. S. Congress to My Yahoo!

By APARNA H. KUMAR, Associated Press Writer

WASHINGTON - Congress will not vote on an assault weapons ban due to expire Monday, Republican leaders said Wednesday, rejecting a last-ditch effort by supporters to renew it.

"I think the will of the American people is consistent with letting it expire, so it will expire," Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist, R-Tenn., told reporters.

The 10-year ban, signed by President Clinton (news - web sites) in 1994, outlawed 19 types of military-style assault weapons. A clause directed that the ban expire unless Congress specifically reauthorized it.

Some Democrats and several police leaders said President Bush (news - web sites) should try to persuade Congress to renew the ban. Bush has said he would sign such a bill if Congress passed it.

"If the president asked me, it'd still be no ... because we don't have the votes to pass an assault weapons ban and it will expire Monday and that's that," House Majority Leader Tom DeLay, R-Texas, told reporters later.

DeLay said the ban was "a feel-good piece of legislation" that does nothing to keep weapons out of the hands of criminals.

However, House Speaker J. Dennis Hastert, R-Ill., said he would consider allowing the House to vote on legislation only if the Senate acted first.

Appearing at a news conference, chiefs of police from the District of Columbia, Los Angeles, Atlanta and Seattle predicted an increase in violent gun crimes if the bans does expire.

"Our streets, our homes, our citizens and our police officers will face great danger unless the federal ban on assault weapons is renewed," said Charles H. Ramsey, the police chief in the nation's capital.

In March, the Senate voted to add the ban to a bill that would have immunized gun manufacturers from liability suits stemming from violent gun crimes. But the Senate voted 90-8 against the final bill after the National Rifle Association urged its defeat.

NRA executive vice president and chief executive Wayne LaPierre said in an interview with The Associated Press that his group is so confident that Congress won't renew the ban that it is not spending any more money on ads this year opposing it.

He said supporters of the ban could not muster the support needed to bring it to a vote in the House because several Democrats attribute losing their majority in the House in 1994 over votes then in favor of the ban.

Just make sure you all get out and vote to make it stick as there must be at least a few similar measures being drafted over at HCI/Dem Inc.

We win.

What's next?

Vote.
Write your CC.

Write the NRA and tell them to get aggressive and push back other laws. Let them know that we need a new PR campaign, the old one sucks. Tell them to stop preaching to the choir and get the word out to joe public. Send a donation if you can.

Write the other orgs (GOA ect...) and send donations if possible.

Take an anti or fence-sitter shooting...

Buy whatever you think you need.

I'm glad to hear this tentative good news but I won't truly celebrate until it expires. I just called the Republican leadership offices to voice my position and I STRONGLY URGE everyone else reading this to do the same. Cmon guys just a couple more calls to heal seal the deal.

I knew it was dead when I bumped into Chuck Grassly in Ames at ISU football game and spoke to him for few minutes.

AWB is dead though anti's are already working on new crap for next session of senate. btw senate session ends october 1st if all goes good. they dont want to run over so they can come home and get out and campaign.

need to get the word out on Post/Pre ban definitions. 1989 sporting arms and import bans.
1986 ban also. we have Executive Orders to go after to get killed.

buy them while you can may not be legal to buy again in the years that follow.

AWB in California

As I understand California law. We still are rifleless. In thanks to Feinstein and Boxer. :barf:

Oh well! Congratulations to all who can buy a semi auto rifle!

I'm bummed!

Oh well! Congratulations to all who can buy a semi auto rifle!

Doger I'm not sure if you're misunderstanding your state's laws. Last I heard you can still buy a (fixed magazine) SkS, M1 Garand, M1A, or Keltec SU-16 none of which have pistol grips.

Just voted some incumbant bums off of the county commision. Also am fixin' to write a leter to the local paper about getting rid of politicians that ignore what the people want.

Can't wait to use that voter's reg card again soon...... If they don't listen:

Either way , throw the bums out. And use your card wisely vote the good ones in and then remind them several times a month about how they got their job, (and how to keep it).

Lone,

If the Repubs have gone to bat for us three times this year to get the ban sunsetted, during an election year, why would they turn around and stick it to us after the election? Where is the gain for them?

I ordered one of the Galil-style folders for my AK from Tapco. :)

I may buy an AR with all the fixings next week. :D

None of the AKM series can be purchased. No detachable mags on SKS's and no grenade launchers. No mags greater than 10 rounds. Curio and relic pistols must go to a FFL01 even if you have a FFL03. Curio and relic SKS's must also go to FFL01 even if you have a FFL03.

As if the AWB helped during the North Hollywood BofA robbery.

I have a co-worker who owns a M1a, as he said, he can now go buy mags cheaper at the Reno Gunshow.

Didn't the Republican controlled Senate vote to renew the AWB earlier this year?

Also known as Senate Amendment 2637 to S.1805.

Statement of Purpose: To provide for a 10-year extension of the assault weapons ban.

The way Repubs and Dems voted on this piece of filth:

http://www.senate.gov/legislative/L...ote_cfm.cfm?congress=108&session=2&vote=00024

Six demos voting nay, one dem not voting, 10 repubs (the usual suspects) voting yea.

Is anyone worried that as soon as the elections are over, the AWB will be re-enacted and signed by whoever is President?

It will depend entirely on November. We already have an edge in the House and with the Texas redistricting that isn't likely to change. With a little luck we will even get rid of a few anti-gun votes like Martin Frost.

There are a lot of good pro-RKBA candidates running in the Senate, mostly on the Republican side. I'm not talking duck hunters but guys with GOA ratings of B or better. If they lose, then the Republicans will likely lose the Senate, plus they will (correctly) start to question whether gun-owners can really deliver the votes they claim.

At the same time, the Democrats will now have the Senate back and be in a position to block legislation or offer deals in return for a renewed AWB.

On the other hand, if the Republicans do well in the Senate, then there is no chance of a ban passing the Senate no matter who the President is, though a Dick Cheney (one of two out of 435 reps to vote against the non-existent plastic gun ban) is certainly a preferable tie-breaking vote to a John Edwards.

Like it or not, the fortunes of gun owners in the next two years are pretty much tied to the success of the Republican party in this election - particularly in the Senate.

Didn't the Republican controlled Senate vote to renew the AWB earlier this year?

Well if a single vote lead constitutes control... the vote was 52-47 in March, with the overwhelming majority of Republicans voting against renewal. If all of the Republicans running for Senate (including the RINOs) in 2004 get elected, the above vote count would go from 52-47 to 45-54, based on the number of candidates who have stated they oppose the ban.

If all of the Democrats win, the total goes from 52-47 to 53-46 and the Democrats take back control of the Senate - so Leahy, Kennedy, Feinstein and Schumer are in charge.

Fienswine was ralling her troops and piggies yesterday. It is not really dead, their like zombies and are going to come back from the grave.

DO NOT let your guard down on this, it is still an issue and although we have a temporary victory, expect the anti gunners and the media to back obn this with a vengence in the next session of congress.

It's not official. It won't be official until I have a brand new 11 rounder in my hand w/o wondering if a cop is going to try to arrest me for a felony.

Do not let your guard down yet. It ain't over til Tuesday.

I couldnt resist. Went to the D.C. website to the "Ask the Chief" section and sent them an e-mail (below)

Recently I read a report published by the Associated Press that had the following qoute:

"Our streets, our homes, our citizens and our police officers will face great danger unless the federal ban on assault weapons is renewed," said Charles H. Ramsey, the police chief in the nation's capital."

If I travel to Washington after the ban is Mr. Ramsey indicating that I will be faced with an inordinate amount of drive-by bayonet attacks?

Or that criminals that went through a backround check and purchased a weapon leagally will now have better control with pistol gripped stocks? Assuming of course a criminal would buy a weapon legally to be used in a crime of course.

It is times like these that remind why its so nice to live in the United States and not Washington D.C.

wonder if I will get a response?

website address is: http://mpdc.dc.gov/atd/atd_feedback.asp

It is over on MONDAY. ATF told me the other day on the phone (atl. office) that the ban is repealed ten years after date of enactment. That was the 13th, not the 14th. The ban is dead on MONDAY.

all clear
