My medium hands love the single stacks, I'm going to take away the easy ones:

1911, P220, P225, Kahrs.

The challenge, add some of the best single stack autoloader designs in a caliber 9mm or larger.

For people that lack big mitts, this thread should be very important in selecting models or building collections, your help is appreciated.

S&W 39 series.

You also forgot the German Luger and Walther P38(and the later P1 and P5) and the Beretta 1951 and Egyptian Helwan also come to mind.

Most .45ACP models on the market.

There are more that I'm not thinking of now.

i'll play

Luger? i think. the colt 380 gov is a great 380, and speaking of 380's, how about the Walther pp series? the ruger 22 pistols...

The Sig P225 fits my hand like it was made for it. It loves the Winchester white box ammo, and shoots smooth as silk.
However, since you took those options, I would have to say a Glock 36.

Hey Bonz,

Thanks for your recommendations, though I did stipulate in the OP, "9mm or larger". We could talk about single stack .380s all day long but I'm more interested in hearing about the larger chamberings.

Again, thanks for your input.

Star BM, Beretta 951, AMT Automag, Desert Eagle, Coonan Arms .357 Mag, LAR Grizzly. Ok, the last two are 1911's, kinda.

Have a S&W 908 9mm that I really like. It's DA only so you might want a DA/SA model. This one has a good trigger feel and is easy for my small hands to handle. It's quite a bit lighter than my Browning HP which is also close to a single stack. Both of these have been very reliable so far.

SIG 239 Series (already stated by prior poster)
S&W 3913 (already stated by prior poster)
S&W 908 (already stated by prior poster)
S&W 908S (already stated by prior poster)
Kahr P9, CW9 (already stated)

NEW Additions to your list:

  • Springfield EMP - World Class 9mm
  • Taurus MilPro 745 - .45ACP in The NEW Series w/ the NEW SA/DA Trigger System
(You might look at the OTHER Taurus NEW Series MilPro's w/SA/DA for a DOUBLE STACK in a Single Stack-Like grip)
  • Kel-Tec PF-9 - Sweet Trigger
(You might ALSO look at the Springfield XD Series for a DOUBLE STACK in a Single Stack-Like grip)

I own them all (I, too, am grip sensitive ;) ) - some in several iterations... :)

I love the single stack as well, as my mitts are on the small side (hence my love affair with the 1911). The CZ P-01 is a double stack that fits me really well.

The ergonomics of the CZ sure does make it feel like a single stack. I only notice the difference when I try to flick the thumb safety up and can't quite reach it comfortably.

With the exception of the custom shop type guns or SIG P210s I would say any single stack collection without a HK P7 is simply not complete.

P7s are fantastic firearms that also happen to very unique in their operation and history.

Thanks for all the recommendations, fellas. Here's what I have for large autos, what they all have in common is that they are medium to small hand friendly.

Kimber 1911A1 Classic Stainless - .45 ACP
Browning BDA/P220 - .45 ACP
Springfield XD40SC - .40 S&W
SIG-Sauer P225 - 9mm
Browning Hi Power - 9mm
CZ75 P-01 - 9mm

May we transition the thread to Double Stack autoloaders that have a real good feel similarly to the single stack designs.

In my mind the HP, the P-01 and the XD designs shine here. Others?

TC TX has the right idea if you see his post in this thread.

Bear,

Since you are looking at the Sig's as mentioned previously in this thread, the 239 looks very promising. It can be had in 9mm or 40 S&W or .357Sig. I was looking at one just the other day and it is too narrow and short for my big paws. It might be just right for you though. I would definately look one up in a local gunstore if you can.

If you are looking for an economical way into this game, Taurus makes a PT-745 Millennium Pro. It is a single stack 45acp semi-auto. I have its big brother the PT-145 that is a double stack 45 auto. Mine has been flawless for over 4000 rounds.

Kahr makes a single stack 9mm and 45acp that lots of folks swear by. I personall have no experience with the Kahr products.

Springfield is coming out with a new gun that might be right up your alley. It is the EMP (Enhanced Micro Pistol) in 9mm I believe that is a single stack 1911 style gun.

There are myriads of such guns out there. If you can try before you buy.

Sig 210/225/220
HK P7
Springfield EMP 9mm 1911-like thingy
Kel-tec PF9, if they ever ship anymore out
Star-don't know the model names, but I have only seen single stacks
S&W 3rd gen. autos
Taurus PT745 Millenium Pro
Taurus PT45
Beretta 84 ? I think that's the right model number. It's the C'N'L capable .380. They made them in double and single stack.

Best single stack in my opinion,a real 1911 without all the attached junk.
Available in several calibers. 45,9mm,10mm,and 38 Super in which you can also use 9x21. Yeah,"they say" you're not supposed to,but I do it anyway.

If you have every detail stripped a Makarov you discover the genius of the design. It has 35 parts. Thats about twenty fewer than a 1911. There is an economy and brilliance to its design. Its hard to argue that the 1911 isn't the best single stack design ever but I put the Makarov a close second. I also love the Star BM. DANG I wish someone would start producing them again!!!:banghead: :banghead:

I think with regards to small hands, the main issue isn't single or double stack, but the trigger reach. There are many double stack firearms with short triggers and they'll work fine. And there are many single stack firearms with long triggers and someone with small hands won't be able to grip it properly.
