Hi folks. I'm been looking at single-stack 9mm's for concealed carry. I would probably carry in a "split-decision" tuckable iwb or similar rig. Right now I'm looking at two good deals I've found; one is a Sig p225, the other is a Kahr K9. Both are lightly used, although they have a little carry wear.
I tend to favor the Sig as the most reliable, but this Kahr has supposedly passed its break-in period and then some without problems. The Kahr has polygonal rifling, but then I can't recall anyone wearing out a SIG. The Kahr is supposedly better at handling +p+ loads. I tend to favor standard pressure 147gr loads if they will shoot to POA, so that may not be an issue.
I was considering a p232, but .380 is on the light side of my comfort zone, though the corbon 90gr load penetrates like 9mm ball I am told. In any event, I'm looking at the p225 and Kahr k9 as the leaders.
Do any of you have any comments or suggestions on a small flat 9mm? I'll consider other calibers, but I'm leaning towards 9mm since the larger calibers may prevent me from placing my shots where I want them when I'm using a small handgun.
Thanks,

David
Edited to add: Budget = $450.

I've heard good things about the Sig P239 in 9mm.

Yeah, the ATF guys who have them love them. I've had trouble finding a good deal on them lately, though.

The S&W 3913/3914 is another good choice in your price range. I got one used for ~$400 with 4 mags.

EDIT: Added "used".

Can you get a 3913/14 for that price???? I love those guns, but I remember 'em being higher than that.

You could look at the new Kel Tec PF9 when it comes out in August. It's pocket sized or IWB, single stack. Of the two and if I wasn't concerned with a pocket, of course I'd go 3913 if price was of no concern.

May I recommend a S&W 908 (or 908s for stainless). They should be around $400 new and use the same mag as the 3913/14 (single stack, 8 rds).

I have had very good luck with mine (wife likes it too).

Well, not a new one. I bought my 3914 used. Condition was about 95%, obviously used, but in great mechanical condition and with very good finish.

I also picked up a NIB 4513 (older 6 rd mag version) for $375 and am waiting for it to get to my local FFL. That should be fun.

If you can get a P225 in that price range get it. You will not find a better single stack 9mm. I also own a P239 and it does not even come close to the P225 in balance feel and overall handling.

K9! I have been carrying one for 3+ years and love it. No issues with reliability and it will be noticeably slimmer than the Sig. Carries great, even under a T-shirt. I also have a Sig P226, so I'm not anti-Sig biased:) I'd love a 225 in my collection as well.

I loved my Kahr P9 Covert - lighter than the K9 but a joy to shoot and very accurate.

Here is one of my Sig-Sauer P225s (I have three in total):

It's a two-tone done via hard-chrome.

More options

Don't forget the;

Kel-Tec P11 (don't need a holster with the belt clip)
Mararkov (9x18, hotter than a .380)
S&W 39-2
Beretta 92M
Taurus Millennium

Walther P5.
Hi Browning. Never considered this gun. What can you tell me about it?
thanks,

David

The Kahr is going to be somewhat smaller and may fit small hands a bit better. However, the SIG is a great pistol and if you can conceal it, it would be my pick. One is competing with a Ruger Redhawk in .45 colt for the top spot on my next pistol to buy list. Ultimately, get the one that points and holds best for you.

Single stack, 9mm, $450 budget...:scrutiny:
My favorite single stack 9mm is my P7M8....maybe w/ $450 you can make payments for the other 1/2  At that price point, I'd probably recommend the single stack, compact Beretta 92...don't remember if they had an M or an L designation  I fired one once & it was very nice!

I like my P239 alot. My P225 had a much heavier trigger and was bigger with the same amount of rounds.

A short history of the Walther P5.

After the 1972 Munich massacre, the German government realized (rather late) that their police needed to be better armed than with the Walther PP that they had carried for all those years!

They put out a call for a new pistol.
Sig, HK and Walther all came up with designs. All three were chosen.
Using the Deutsch government designation, they are: Sig P6 (P225), Walther P5, and the celebrated HK P7.

The P5 is a continuation and indeed final refinement of the infamous Walther P38. It's lock work and action are the same. However, the magazines do not interchange. The magazine release is in the European style, ie, on the heel of the stock.

It is an excellent pistol in it's own right, although not nearly as well known as the Sig and HK.

Here's mine.

It's my favorite 9mm single stack!! :D
