The Best Use for A Mosin Nagant That I've Ever Seen

I like it, I would fill it with non shooting relics & reproductions, and keep the real shooters locked up.
I think it would be cool to have different boxes dedicated to different battles.
Revolutionary war, WW1, WW2, etc... I would have to be rich to do that though.

Kinda cheesy unless you have a room dedicated to similar decor.

That is true of most furniture. My current coffee table would look out of place in my brother's den. I don't think the builder designed it for your standard living room suit

That's an awesome idea. I wonder if it has the musty smell like all the Nagant boxes Ive been around.

Very ceative and I hope you don't mind if I steal your Idea, I may want to do one for my reloading mancave. Great job.

That is VERY sweet!

To do it right and achieve a proper level of class the original crate would best be washed off with a light bleach to remove exterior odor creating issues. Same with the inside. Once dry the inside would be finished smooth and shiney with a good sanding and a nice oil finish that mimics the level of sheen found on the rifles. And perhaps lightly stained with a dyed oil rather than a pigment stain to make it look like the honey like colour that comes with age before exposed wood turns grey.

The outside would be best treated to removal of any spinters and corners that will come off as future splinters and the green pigment stain matched and touched up. Then a coat or two of something like Thompson's Water Seal to seal the wood and help make it easier to dust. Raw wood and paint like a rifle crate is a truly hellish dust magnet otherwise.

The top should be from 3/8 tempered glass for both durability in the first place and safety in the second "just in case".

I dunno though.... in the end I could see where it may be easier to make a "crate" coffee table from scratch patterned after a proper gun crate and then finish it to mimic the green paint and markings. It may prove easier and a little bit more classy looking. I'd have more control over the look and could deal with the edges which could otherwise splinter off. After all, those crates were made from the wood that wasn't a lot of good for anything else.

The edges are metal, the wood is merely painted green, and the lid is custom-built for the job. The inside merely needed to be degreased and that is not all that bad. The exterior doesn't really have a splinter problem.

The big thing about this is that many of us have these crates - what to do with what you already have versus building from scratch. Mosin guys have bandied about the coffee table idea for the crates for a while. I may do that with mine - or I may still keep it for simple storage.

BCRider, you want it to be more "classy looking"? The words "classy looking" and Mosin Nagant, should never be spoken together!

I have seen it done many times, this is one of my favorites. The grenade feet are the icing on this cake!

I'm thinking of some wire, a switch, and a lamp shade. If the bayonet is still attached, it could be a selfinstalling tent stake.
