Rep. McCarthy to Speak at Convention; 'Democrats Show True Colors...Again,' Says CCRKBA

BELLEVUE, Wash., July 22 /U.S. Newswire/ -- By offering rabidly anti-gun Rep. McCarthy a plum opportunity to promote legislation expanding the ban on so-called "assault weapons" during their convention next week, the Democratic Party is once again showing its true colors to millions of American gun owners, the Citizens Committee for the Right to Keep and Bear Arms (CCRKBA) said today.

"For months, everywhere you turned, Democrats have been out hustling gun owners for their votes, trying to portray themselves as pro-Second Amendment. Giving McCarthy a microphone proves Democrats haven't abandoned their failed gun control policies," said CCRKBA Chairman Alan Gottlieb. "What would the press be saying if Republicans allowed a recognized gun rights proponent like Rep. Don Young to urge his colleagues to let that ban expire?"

McCarthy's husband was murdered by a deranged racist gunman named Colin Ferguson, who also wounded her son in a shooting on a commuter train in 1993. Ferguson did not use a so-called "assault weapon" in that crime, but a handgun he purchased in California-a state with some of the most restrictive gun laws in the nation.

"Democrats may as well erase any credibility they may have gained among gun owners over the past two years," Gottlieb observed. "So much for John Kerry's pheasant hunting and skeet shooting photo ops with borrowed firearms, or any other lip service that Democrats are offering gun owners back in their districts. Allowing McCarthy a forum to campaign against the firearms rights of millions of law-abiding Americans in the middle of their national convention should tell firearms owners all they need to know about the true Democrat agenda."

Gottlieb said he was "disappointed, but hardly surprised" that convention planners and party leaders are giving McCarthy the podium. In balance, he suggested, Democrats should also offer retiring Georgia Sen. Zell Miller equal time at the microphone to tell his fellow Democrats why they are wrong to to campaign for irresponsible gun control measures.

"If there were more Democrats like Miller, and fewer like McCarthy," Gottlieb stated, "the party would not have to be camouflaging its true sentiments behind borrowed shotguns and hunter orange. We're urging all gun owners to listen to McCarthy's speech, listen to the applause it elicits from the party leadership, and then decide whether Democrats deserve to be trusted with their Second Amendment rights."

With more than 650,000 members and supporters nationwide, the Citizens Committee for the Right to Keep and Bear Arms is one of the nation's premier gun rights organizations. As a non-profit organization, the Citizens Committee is dedicated to preserving firearms freedoms through active lobbying of elected officials and facilitating grass-roots organization of gun rights activists in local communities throughout the United States.

By all means, I hope she rants and raves about the evils of "assault weapons."

We should seize onto this - advertise to gun owners all the guns the new "expanded" ban is supposed to cover. That ought to light a fire under their butts.

With any luck, Rep. McCarthy with devolve her speech into a rant like the Wellstone funeral or the Howard Dean screech.

In any case, a formal presentation to renew the AWB won't change anybody's mind. Hopefully, it will aid the loss of votes among conservative-leaning Dems in the midwest and deep south.

"So much for John Kerry's pheasant hunting and skeet shooting photo ops with borrowed firearms, or any other lip service that Democrats are offering gun owners back in their districts."

Those photo-ops are like Michael Moore's movies, preaching to the choir. It is unlikely that anyone on this forum, any other forum like it, any NRA member or anyone who actually thinks about the right to bear arms will be fooled.
As for Rep. McCarthy, while we are certainly sympathetic to her and the families of the other victims for their losses, it was not the gun acting on its own that killed and wounded the passengers. It was a murderer, supposedly "deranged", who was able to execute them as they sat there or sought cover, unable to stop the slaughter, because they were prevented from having the best means of self defense. (Any discussion as to the 'victim' mentality is best left for another post.)
The killing that took place on the Long Island Railway that day is a perfect illustration of the proposition that while the chances of ever needing a gun are exceedingly small, if you ever do need one, nothing else will quite do.

You might want to edit the title of this post. No one knows for sure that she will go on an "AWB tirade," do they? May'be it should read, "McCarthy might go on an AWB tirade. We don't want anyone to think something 'dishonest' is being posted.

Let's see.....McCarthy is understably bitter and angry over the death of her husband.

However, she aims her bitterness and anger at guns in general and gun rights.

It wasn't Colin Ferguson who killed her husband on that train, it was THE GUN, THE GUN, THE GUN!!!

She ran for Congress specifically on a platform of being a gun controller first and foremost.

During her time in Congress, she's made several overwrought statements against guns and gunownership in general.

The AWB is sunsetting, and she's going to speak at the Dem convention specifically about the sunset of the AWB.

Of course, she's going to be completely rational and reasoned and measured.

How presumptive of me to predict a "tirade" from McCarthy............

I mean, after all, who could have logically predicted that Hitler would yell and scream and foam at the mouth once he got up in front of the microphone in that soccer (football) stadium?

Only way you could make that stretch would be to consider the 15 round mag he most likely had in his handgun (seems like it was a ruger P89 or whatever...) an "assault weapon"...

I certainly concur with everyone else

who has speculated about what the nature of McCarthy's speech will be.

Now, what we need to do is

1) get a copy of the pithy moments of that tape;

2) get a copy of the video of SCUBA Ted railing against .30-30 ammunition

3) edit it well, get it up on a site, and finally

4) spread the link to gun owners everywhere we can.

The Democrats will only let one way speeches at their convention.

No pro-gun speeches, no pro-life speeches, no speeches for tax cuts.

Nothing that would put a counter argument to anything.

Given John Kerry's "passion" for "hunting and skeet shooting", which, by the way, the protection of which is what the 2A is all about. , expect this speech to be scheduled at 1 PM on the first day of the convention, when there are no TV cameras within a mile.

Seriously, the anti-gun community makes up some (I have no idea) percentage of mainstream Democrats, and therefore needs to be heard, but given what I've seen from Kerry they seem to have found their "middle of the road" message - they are FOR gun ownership as long as its about hunting and sport purposes.

I ain't buyin' it.

so uh.....how many of you guys contend that we only have "4 days left" to concern ourselves with?!!!!! hmmmmm?

I hope we don't march into September like a cocky General Custer at the battle of Little Big Horn expecting victory, but then only to find ourselves asking "Where'd all these Indians come from?"

I'm a bit concerned abt what could happen if Congress heeds the calls to come back in Aug to deal w/some of the issues raised in the Sept. 11 Commission report - that could be a perfect opportunity to attach something.

If I were a congressperson, my vacation was cut to discuss what has to immediately be done about something that happened 3 years ago, and then someone tried to take the opportunity to attach things only partly-related at best, I would be mad. At least, I hope they feel that way. I know I can count on my rep, too bad I can't say the same about my Senators.

NPR reported yesterday that McCarthy's husband was "killed with an assault weapon that was banned."

I think this is illustrative of how the VPC in tandem with the Brady Bunch were trying to distort the facts on how many police and law enforcement officers were killed with "assault weapons" before the ban, and how the ban actually reduced this number.

They used numbers of police officers killed before the ban, including handguns that could hold more than 10 rounds, and by including guns that wouldn't be included in the ban, like Ruger Mini-14s. Then, after the ban, they only used numbers of police officers killed by firearms that would be included in the ban, including handguns that could hold only 10 rounds or less. This would inflate the number of cops killed with "assault weapons" before the ban, while deflating the number of cops killed with "assault weapons" after the ban. These numbers are misleading at best, and an outright lie at worst.

The informed people here can see all of the holes in this methodology. In addition, the VPC and the Brady Bunch then make the totally ignorant statement that the assault weapons ban needs to be strengthened, because manufacturers easily changed some cosmetic features and were thus able to sell guns that were functionally the same as the banned guns.

Can you say "major disconnect" boys and girls?
