The Fantastic 7mm-08!

Mav, if I had to choose one rifle chambering and my choice was the .308 Win, .260 Rem or the 7mm-08 I would absolutely choose the .308 Win for so many reasons, not least of which is that I can shoot a 155gr Lapua Scenar, a 178gr A-MAX or a 208gr A-MAX not to mention a host of Barnes TSX bullets. Then again, the recoil of the .308 Win has never been an issue for me, but nor has the .300 Win Mag either ... just my opinion. :D

1858, wish I could post pics of my targets, but dime groups are the norm. I had a .22-250 exactly like my buddies, his shot tight even touching patterns, mine with the same optics was nowhere near...go figure...

TexasPatriot.308, I'm happy for you but I'm done wasting bullets, powder and primers on this Savage ... it's either a new barrel or a different manufacturer for me. I like quite a few aspects of the Savage so I'm 95% sure I'll change the barrel. I'll think of it as an upgrade rather than a repair!

7X57 for moose

My wife just bagged a moose this fall using her Winchester Mod. 70 cambered for 7mm Mauser. She but two 140gr. Barnes TSX bullets in the boiler room from 95 yards. Both bullets went though the shoulder and heart and lodged just under the skin on the far side. The moose only took a few more steps spun around and dropped 50ft. from our boat. Life is good! Let it be known I've had to work a whole lot harder for my moose in the past.

Good shot placement with a well designed bullet fired within the effective range for the cartridge used will usually result in meat in the freezer.

Riverrunner????? You let your wife shoot a Moose with something smaller that a .416rb????? Man you should be horse whipped, tied up in the blazing sun of a desert, buried in the sand up to your head and let fire ants have at your eyes, tied to a post and dipped in pollen around a bee hive, Ok im getting carried away. Just preparing you for the people that think anything under a go go fast magnum with less than 30cal size was way too little gun for the task.

The 7mm.08, in my lowly opinion, is one of the best medium game, and even up to elk with proper bullet, cartridges made. Low recoil, excellent BC selections, very good performance. I think it maximizes the .308 case to perfection.

TexasPatriot.308, short story, I have a matched pair of 30.06's made custom for my dad and I YEARS ago. When I say matched I mean the barrel blanks were even cut from the same stock, Serial numbers end one number different. Mine, with factory loads, LOVES the rem corelocs in 180 grain and will not group the Win silvertip 180 grains for nothing. My dad's is just the opposite. Couldnt hit a barn wall from the inside with a coreloc but dimes out the win's. Every rifle is different. You may have gotten a Bad barrel from savage. If you want to rebarrel it, I would get a hold of Scott Null over at Savage Gunsmithing. He is about the best I have dealt with with Savage systems. Little salty on his Barrels but you can bet they are true and well made. http://www.savagegunsmithing.com/index.html
