From 175gr A-Square monolithic solids to 100gr Sierra varmint bullets... 180gr Berger VLD target bullets to 110gr Barnes TTSX (my current project)...

This caliber is fantastic. The energy vs recoil is outstanding :what:

Varmints turn into vapor (100gr Sierra). Deer go down like they were struck by lightning (120gr TSX). Hogs take a dirt nap (140gr TSX)

I can't say enough... just gotta love this caliber!

Next to 7mm BR the 7-08 is my favorite 7. Nosler 139 grain partitions are just perfect.

I don't understand the "-08" part of the name. What's that from?

From the 08 in th308 Win in which the 7mm-08 is based off of....just the way Remington chose to market it is all.. It's .264" cousin was named the 260 Rem instead of the 264-08, I wonder why:confused::D

... or a .358-08 to complete the set!!

Makes me wonder if the .308 Win is done spawning new cartridges. We have the .243 Win, the .358 Win, the 7mm-08 Rem and the .260 Rem ... what next? Does anyone here own a rifle chambered in .358 Win or have you fired one?

:)

I got a cheap Stevens 200 7mm-08 with Nikon 3x9x50 on it, shoots dime groups all day long, hammer big pigs at 200 plus yards all the time. it rides in my truck, dont care if it gets dirty, beat up, stolen is another story cause it is a keeper.... Stevens 200 cant go wrong, 7-08, cant beat that caliber..

What bullet, powder or factory load are you shooting? My Savage Weather Warrior with the AccuStock/AccuTrigger won't shoot 139gr bullets at all and it has the same 1:11.5" twist as your Stevens.

:)

Ironically, I don't own a 7mm-08 but consider it and the .260 Remington the best all around centerfires available. I already own 30/06, .308 and 6.5x55 rifles so have no need for the other "all arounders" but if I were advising a beginner, the two wonder unders in the .308 family are my recommendations of choice.

"Deer go down like they were struck by lightning (120gr TSX). Hogs take a dirt nap (140gr TSX)"

It's a great caliber, for sure, but some credit should go to the bullets, too. TSX are superb bullets.

I completely agree, the 7mm-08Rem. and the .260Rem. made the mediocre .308Win. obsolete. The .308Win. just doesn't have the powder to push bullets with good BCs and SDs fast enough IMO. WRT .30cals...Long live the .30-06! :D

1858 I am shooting Hornady light mag 139 grain SSTs, I got some big hogs in my pastures and I drop 200 pounders and bigger real regular, right now as hot as it is here, late evening I catch em at stock tanks toward dark, lung/heart shots with massive internal damage.

7mm08...

Last year the Academy/D*cks type stores put Stevens 200's on sale before hunting season...$250+! What a red-hot screaming deal for a 7mm08! My local store sold out of every caliber but 7mm08 in a week! What a bunch of dummies!

Last time I looked at the ballistics of the 25-06, 270, 308 and 30-06...from 300 yds to 500 yards...wit similar weight bullets, the 7mm08 catches and outshines all of them! It is a heck of a cartridge...but my home-built loads for my Custom 98 Mauser in 7x57...are 100 fps faster with the same bullet and no signs yet of abnormal pressure.

I have all those cartridge rifles in my battery except the 25-06, and definitely do NOT feel under-gunned for anything in the lower 48. The 175 gr does a number on moose and elk at any reasonable distances!

Sometimes old stuff is the right choice, guys on my lease poo-poo the 7x57, but nothing kills 'em deader than dead like my Mauser...with less recoil!

But I have no qualms recommending the 7mm08!

Fast enough for what?! You don't think that a 178gr A-MAX with a MV of 2,650 fps is fast enough?! And for the record, the .308 Win is far from obsolete. I own a 7mm-08, four .308 Win rifles and I'm building a .260 Rem rifle and there's absolutely nothing obsolete about the .308 Win. It's still an excellent hunting and target shooting cartridge.

That's the bullet I'm using ... the Hornady 139gr SST and while I'm sure it's very effective on pigs and I've found it to be accurate enough for hunting inside 300 yards, I'm just not getting anything close to sub MOA performance let alone "the dime sized groups" you mention. I'm going to switch out the barrel on mine for a 1:9 twist.

:)

1858, wish I could post pics of my targets, but dime groups are the norm. I had a .22-250 exactly like my buddies, his shot tight even touching patterns, mine with the same optics was nowhere near...go figure...
