I sent the FFLC an e-mail last night to ask about having my 03 C&R FFL updated...

Hello,

I need to have my 03 C&R FFL updated [for personal reasons]. Would it be possible for me to simply fax a quick letter asking for an updated FFL, and a copy of the current FFL to you folks at (404) 417-2751?

Thanks in advance.

And here's the reply, waiting for me at 8AM this morning...

Thank you for contacting the ATF's Federal Firearms Licensing Center (FFLC) with your e-mail inquiry.

Fax the documents to include a copy of your FFL.

I hope this has been responsive to your e-mail inquiry. Thank you for allowing the FFLC to assist with your inquiry and/or concerns.

Sincerely,

Note that I didn't add that smilie face. Through quite a few interactions, this is the normal kind of experience that I've ever had with the BATFE - quick, polite, and helpful. Once in a while, it wouldn't hurt for us to remember how helpful they are. Remember - nothing in the laws (that they didn't write!) say they have to be so helpful.

I'll say this: the ATF form distribution center (the people that mail out things like 4473s, codes of federal regulations, Form 1s and 4s, etc.) has to be the most efficient (on a time scale, as I don't know their operating budget) gov't agency on the planet. Usually my stuff arrives within 3 days of ordering it, and some of those orders aren't placed until the afternoon.

I have also had the good fortune of dealing with only the most professional of ATF agents, all of which were polite and many of which just wanted to talk about guns. I don't agree with many of the laws they enforce, and as an agency they have done some horrible things, but I think the majority of the people in the organization are good folk.
