Let her decide!

1911's are a great design anyway and most are very well executed these days. Shop around, get some brochures, she'll love you for helping her find the right one.

Colt LTW Commander if for carry and a GOV if for home and range. Later on a Defender or new Agent for carry. I have a Kimber and a Detonics but I reach for my Colts most of the time.

Did she form her opinion by looking at the gun or by shooting it?

+1 on that. Being somewhat new to the "game" (cult is perhaps more accurate...), I have always been surprised by what firearms I think I'll like when seen from afar and what I really enjoy shooting. Amoung the pleasant surprises that I have had: sp101, 1911s, heavy revolvers. :)

Good luck!

Definitely get a Colt.

Bad advice. Half the colts I handle these days have unacceptable flaws for $1000+ pistols. Last two Gold Cups I handled had burrs on the slide/frame interface, poorly fitted ejectors, and wobbly lockup.

To the OP: Get the Springfield Mil-Spec. It's slightly more money than a Daly or RIA, but can be upgraded into a far better pistol because it has good raw parts. You can put $300 into a MilSpec and have a great gun, whereas $300 into a Daly will still be a mediocre pistol.

pittspilot, that is a mind blowing good price. You scored. :)

Feedback on the Spartan? I've sold about 50 of them I think. Of those, we had two that had issues. One would not feed hollowpoints. It got sent back. They polished it under warranty, and it has been 100% ever since. The other had a problem with extractor tension. New extractor and it has been 100%.

So two minor problems covered under warranty. Everybody else has been happy, or at least hasn't bothered to tell me anything.

The only thing I don't like about the Spartan is the guide rod. I don't like that type of full length, and swap them out for either one of the slightly shorter ones, or a GI plug. Either way it is about a $10 upgrade. No function issues, I just like to be able to take mine apart easier.

Three guys in my shop got them for themselves. They've been surprisingly accurate, reliable, and overall good guns. At the price point I sell them on during the group buy, they smoke everything else in that range.

And plus, STI is my favorite company to deal with. If you want one currently, contact me for a quote. I don't post group buy prices publically, but my GB prices are really good.

I do like the Springfields, but at that price range you don't get the same features. You have to step up to the loadeds, and those cost more. I've not done anything with the Taurus.

Thanks Correia, I've never handled one of the Spartans but I do have a few friends with STIs and they are very happy with them. I think for the price the Spartan would be a good choice.

Actually, I have not had that same experience. Are you talking about new guns or used guns that you had run across?

While, I admit that Colt does have some variance in the QC, if you find a well fitted Colt, you usually cannot find anything better elsewhere.

Brand new Gold Cups fresh from the factory.

A "well-fitted" 1911 from any good brand (SA, Kimber, Colt, etc) will be a great gun. The question is how easy it is to find such a gun - and the average new Colt I've handled lately has been inferior to $400 Armscor pistols.

Conqueror,

I hate to hear that. Here's hoping that the next Colts you come across are much better.

She just picked a Springfield 1911.

Thank you for your help

Sorry for not following up until now.

She shot the Colt 1911 and loved it. We went to the local store and she picked out a Springfield Mill Spec. I haven't shoot it yet but i like the grip and the way it points, now i see why so many likes the 1911.
It got me thinking of getting my own 1911... maybe a long slide? hmm

I liked the looks of the long slides at first too. I got over it. I would recommend a Government sized Springfield for you too. The long slide guns are hard to find holsters for, and are hard to liquidate.
