I believe the Spencer shotgun was also available in a folding model. A salesman tried to influence the NYPD Commissioner to buy them. Commissioner Roosevelt thought them useless until the salesman produced one from under his overcoat. It had been hidden the whole time and TR did not know it.

Good article. It's not surprising that although John Browning did not invent the first pump action firearm that he was behind the first truly commercially successful pump shotgun. He kind of had a habit of producing very reliable and successful firearms.
 
The folding shotgun Strawhat refers to above is probably the Burgess, a later repeating shotgun introduced ca. 1894. It did fold, and was unique in that the operating system was based on a sliding pistol grip, which its inventor called a 'Haveness action'.
