The Great 22 LR Shortage of 2009

He He..I have been hording CCI mini-mag 22LR for 5 boxes a week for quite a while myself.

WalMart seems to continually get CCI shorts, LR, and Mag with the lr's going for about $6.50/50. Last night I found Federal red box 550-paks (my favorite bulk 22 ammo) and picked up 4. I'm pretty good for 22 now; seems the only shortage at WalMart through all this was in good bulk ammo (I don't particularly care for Remington bulk 22). The CCI stuff has always been available and last night saw a lot of WWB 22mag for the first time too.

The .22 shortage is probably mostly fallout from the centerfire ammo hoarding that caused such shortages and elevated prices. People are turning to rimfire shooting as an economical alternative. There are probably some hoarders, but legitimate change in shooting habits is likely part of it. The centerfire market appears to be starting to swing back toward normality, so hopefully .22LR will follow suit.

When it comes to the people who have been buying out ammo and primers to resell at higher costs, I hope that the return to normality is relatively fast so that they lose enough money on their profiteering to render them incapable or unwilling to do this again.

All of us can help in this regard: Don't buy ammo or primers from private sellers with large lots for sale. Right now and for some time after the shortage concludes, people who have been hoarding or profiteering will be sitting on top of stock that they bought in high volumes when the shortages were occurring. Those who just wanted to stock up or make sure they had enough to shoot will just fire off their surplus or sit on it, but those who were panic-buying beyond their means or with the intent to resell at inflated prices will be looking to get rid of their surplus.

While buying huge lots of ammo and preventing others with more reasonable buying patterns from being able to get hold of ammunition isn't illegal or wrong, we as a community are free to express our displeasure at this sort of selfish and greedy practice. Don't buy ammo or primers from private sellers now at inflated prices. Don't buy them later at reasonable prices, and don't buy them ever even at extremely cheap prices. Force the people who have contributed the most to this shortage to eat every penny of their injudicious expenditures.

I know some people here envision a Mad Max type future where they'll be bartering .22lr shells for jugs of non-irradiated water, but I don't.

When I want to shoot rimfire I pick up a value brick or two and a couple boxes of Stingers and plink away.

shortage of .22 ammo

wouldn't it be nice for some green thinking person to find a way to use waste plastic for ammo-we would be in good shape.-here's hoping

That's the beauty of getting older..................I don't remember. It's a new conversation to me.

I think I'll read Tom Sawyer, Huck Finn, and Moby Dick.... it should be all brand new again.

CCI Stingers

Finally, got my shipment of CCI Stingers. Placed an order for 2 bricks from Cabela's back in December 2009, and almost 5 months to the day, I finally got them in. Plus two of those "free" dry boxes.

Now, talk about vicious circle. Knowing what I know now about the delays and shortages, I should have ordered 4 more bricks, thus making my own contribution to the great ammo shortage, and creating a demand that'll jack up the prices even more.

Went to gun show in Kingman AZ couple weeks ago, was surprised to find all kinds of .22 RF ammo (and other calibers of CF) and the price wasn't that bad. Go to the local Wally Worlds and they are out of most everything.

And thank you for articulating it so well. What goes around comes around.

What goes around comes around.

Yep.

FWIW, the local Wal-Marts in these parts have held a steady supply of .22LR premium boxes and bulk packs for the past 2 months. Winchester XX was 20 bucks and change for a bulk of 550 earlier this week. I'm buying a box a week until I get restocked.
