So as I mentioned earlier my wife drew her Rocky Mt Goat tag this year after only three years of applying. The odds are preposterously small to draw a goat tag in only three years.

Yesterday I checked the draw results. After 17 years of trying. I drew a Shiras moose tag!

My summer plans just changed. Every available day off is either going to be spent above tree line looking at goats or up in my moose unit getting to know the local meeses...

This is going to be the most epic local hunting season ever!

We also all drew antelope but nobody got deer or elk. Which is a good thing as my hunting cup runnith over this year. :)

Congrats. When my wife and I hunted Shiras moose in Wyoming, Colo. didn't even have a moose season. Maybe they didn't even have moose in the '70s.

The only moose I've seen up close were in RMNP. And we were able to see several quite close. Magnificent animals. Good luck to both of you.

Congrats! Colorado is good this year. I drew an elk tag for W2R. Good luck and good hunting to you and your bride.

Cheers,

Harry

PS-I assume you'll use a .375 H&H for the Moose.

I was thinking of using a 9.3x74R double rifle just for cool factor...

If they are in the rut I'll try some calling but primarily spot and stalk.

When is your season? I plan my moose hunts to be as late as possible [Season ends Sept 25.] The bulls are fully in rut then. But Co may [will] be different on rut times.
Lots of fun. I once called a legal bull right to my tent door. Dropped him right next to my raft.

My family had land in Maine when I was a kid.
sometime around 64 a cousin was driving up to spend the weekend. He was driving a V W beattle and hit a moose at night. My cousin had 2 broken legs. The moose got up peed on the wreck and walked away, or so the story got told.

Jim, Colorado season is Oct-1 to Oct 14. I've been told that the rut is dependent on the weather so a late summer will delay the rut.

I'm surprised you have to draw a tag for deer. I've never hunted out west. Are deer uncommon? In NY, you buy a hunting license and that includes a tag for all big game animals (here it is only whitetail deer and bear). The only draw involved is for doe tags.

According to US Fish and Wildlife, NY sells twice as many hunting licenses as CO, for a state that has half the area (so four times as many hunters per sq mi) yet doesn't require a draw. Why does CO use a draw for deer? Heavier predator pressure? Lower quality habitat?

This is not criticism of CO. I'm completely prepared to believe that the government of NY is doing it wrong. It usually does. Just interested in learning.

It has to do with animal population numbers vs hunter demand vs proper conservation and management.

Thanks for the reply. I know it has to do with balancing hunter numbers and animal population. As I pointed out, CO 1/4 the hunter density that NY has (twice the land area but half the hunters). I guess there must be much fewer deer in CO if you have to draw a tag. I was wondering why that might be?

wombat,

Colorado has a healthy deer population. But we don't have the type of terrain and feed that supports huge deer numbers per square mile. Much like most of the Rocky Mt states.

H&H, I know off topic, but how is hunting in WY? I just sent a resume to a company in Cody.
