is that it actually requires one to disarm completely;

deliberately choose to park and walk in one of the sketchier areas of town to the courthouse;

and, today at least, stand in a line out the door with a whole crew of interesting people waiting to go through the metal detectors–more than usual–most likely because some sort of deadline for paying this month's restitution is coming up, or so some staffers observed.

It was an interesting slice of life.

But whatever: $32, and I'm GTG for another 5 years. :D

Same thing here. No lock boxes, Single line to the metal detector.
Last time a crack head granny in front of me and a wannabe gangsta in back of me, both paying installments on whatever. Interesting experience and not second look at my Hickory cane.

bikerdoc, that is one of the best sig lines ive seen.

btw, when i lived in NoVa. i renewed my ccw permit through the mail. whats changed?

My VA CHP is a a few years from renewal, but I'll add that you also go through this when you have a change of address.

A useful tactic for most places where waiting in a government queue is required is to go mid afternoon on a Tuesday toward the beginning of the month. YMMV.

Years ago we had to go in the courthouse in my county unarmed.
Now it's in the Sheriff's office and no need to disarm. I like it better.

We do not have to go to a courthouse for CCW renewal in Florida.

That said, there are issues with needing to go to court to be a witness, pay a fine/ticket, etc. The city I am in, Downtown is very congested so many like to take the train. While it is perfectly legal to carry on the train, once you get to the courthouse, there is no place to securely leave/lock your weapon. As in most cities, going to a courthouse means downtown where the scum of the earth either resides, or they must go to court as well. The same is true of going to an arena for a sporting event. So you are left with two choices, either drive and then be forced to leave your firearm in the car, or go unarmed on the train and walk through undesirable areas(certainly more so than were many people live).

I renew at the local PD, where they also have municipal court. They have a metal detector these days. But more disconcerting to me is the sense you get dealing with the "public servants" that you are stupid and nothing you say to them will be given any credence.

I usually carry a gun, and ALWAYS have my pocketknife, except when entering public buildings and controlled areas at airports. Yeah, it is a weird feeling of nakedness to have neither...especially in a town with the drug and gang problems we do.

Same in Arkansas, although you have to have a range session with an instructor to certify it.

My last session my instructor was a State Trooper. His comment was, "Can you teach me to shoot like that?"

In Mendocino County, California we get a letter from the Sheriff's office a few months prior to our LTC expiring telling us it is time to renew.

The renewal class (4 hours) is held at the local gun club (Ukiah Rifle and Pistol Club). After the renewal shooting session there is a table in the clubhouse with staffers from the Sheriff's office to take the filled-out forms, checks, etc.

The signed LTC comes in the mail about a month later, good for the next two years. The only time I have to go to the Sherrif's Administration office is to add or subract a gun that is listed on the LTC. No need to be armed for this, it is 10 feet from my car to the door, no lines and armed Sherrifs Deputies everywhere.

Alabama State Law:

It's a CRIME to go into the Sheriff's Office armed, for ANY PURPOSE~! You
can, and will be arrested on the scene~!

Wrong. When I interviewed with them I was carrying. They asked, I said "yes." They asked to see it and we talked guns for 20 minutes.

And that is how an inalienable right becomes a conditional privilege.

From the perspective of an anti, there is nothing in the Second Amendment that says we have an inherent right to hide a gun in our pocket. But RKBA is to be un-infringed, so if we define carrying arms as "in whatever way we see fit," then concealed carry is covered.

There are many ways that RKBA is infringed. Having to jump through hoops for a CHP is just one.

We just show up at any driver's license center and pay our overpriced renewal fee and get another picture taken. If the one a few miles from my office looks too busy when I go over at lunch I just wait for another day and drop back by for a "late lunch". In and out in 5 to 15 minutes.

From the perspective of an anti, there is nothing in the Second Amendment that says we have an inherent right to hide a gun in our pocket.

By that reasoning there is nothing in the First Amendment that says we have an inherent right to hide a newspaper or a Bible in our pocket either. In fact open carry is totaly illegal in my state even if you have a concealed carry permit. When the one and only item that the Constitution guarantees you the right to possess becomes illegal you can bet your sweet bippy that the Constitution has been infringed.

To renew in MI -- you have to go thru all the same **** that you went thru to get your original CPL/CCW except you do not have to take the 8 hour training course.
$105 fee
$15 fingerprint
About $20 for 2 small photos
Put in your paperwork & pay your fee---wait about 2 months & they call you to pick up license.
They were giving 5 years flat before renewel---BUT--- some smart guy said it should be changed according to your birthday which gives some people just over 4 years--CUTE
Where I live in Wayne county---the best part is ---we don't have to keep going to Detroit city hall---we can go to the local sheriff office.
I am glad that we are allowed to have this license.

I never realized how widespread this renewal stuff was. I've been licensed since 1974 and there's no set expiration date on mine. This is for Monroe county (Rochester area) of western NY state and there's only three conditions, which are: 1. It is revocable at any time 2. It expires when revoked. 3. Not valid to carry a weapon in New York City unless approved by the Police Commissioner of that city. The way this state is going financially I'm shocked that they haven't started requiring renewals every few years so they can sock us with a renewal fee. That's why so many places have expiration dates so that if you want to continue to have a carry license they can turn it into another revenue stream.

Haven't heard of any grandfathering provisions for pistol licenses in this area but I'll ask my sister who just got her first pistol and license almost three years ago. Will also ask the LGS owner about it also. He's a retired county sheriff and a wealth of information on stuff like that.

Very good.
Not the same but a long time ago around here I joined a shooting range.. it was like $25 to get on the books/get a card and then some hourly deal on top of that. About the year after I joined they started requiring an annual membership fee of like $150 (I could be off) and the hourly charge.
My membership is honored to this day because when I became a member, there was no expiration date implied etc.
