Walking around the Tanner gun show yesterday, spied this unusual old Colt revolver. Some honest holster wear (I'd call it 80%) but the bluing is original, no rust, no pitting. Picked it up, wow it's really heavy.

Seller says, "Yeah, can you guess what those grips are made of?"

I look again, feel them, "Wow are these some kind of stone?"

Seller says "I'm pretty sure those are jade." :scrutiny:

It's a neat old Colt. I have zero use for an Official Police in .32-20. But it's a Colt and the price is shockingly low. I ask if I can check the action. No endshake. Bank vault tight on all chambers. Hmmmm. Checkered hammer, trigger and latch. Feels good in my hand. OK I want it.

The original owner was some sort of Wyoming 'rock hound' I'm going to find out a little more about the guy. Justin also offered to have a geologist friend take a look at the grips for me, if they are for real they are probably worth more than I paid for the revolver.

Which was $275  I need to buy a lotto ticket. Maybe I can win back the $42 I spent on a single box of ammo for this old wheel gun. Found a holster for five bucks, fits it really well. Oh and yes after a quick cleaning the bore is nice and shiny, used but not abused. And according to my research this Colt was made in 1927, the first year of this model.

Going to get a set of repro grips too, not sure if I should shoot it with these grips if they are jade. The left side grip doesn't quite fit at the heel and it's obvious these are 'home' made, but they sure are unusual. Even if they aren't jade, I think I just got the best deal I've ever found at a gun show.

A few more pics...

One small scratch on the barrel but otherwise, a small one on right side of frame, screws aren't boogered up. A tiny ding on the front of the frame (pencil point). But for a gun this old, it's in really good shape.

Back when Custer was a pup, a fellow Laramie Police Officer and later,a fellow Wyoming Highway Patrolman made a set of jade grips for his revolver. A Model 19 as I recall. His looked very much like yours.

He had his own source of jade from on the reservation, which he guarded quite closely. He made any number of interesting things out of jade.

He left the HP and returned to his childhood home in Lander WY.

He is dead now, but if that fits with what you know, PM me and I'll tell you what I know about him.

I wonder what General Patton would have to say about jade grips? Probably involve a purveyor of harlotry in a Chinatown sporting house.

I like 'em. :D

That is a very nice Official Police. It looks like a six-inch barrel. Very cool addition with or without the grips.

ADD: I need one of those. .32-20 is a great round.

FYI gang, after a bunch of research Wyoming jade in 1/4 inch slabs 3 by 3 inches is selling for $250 plus these days.. I think indeed I got a HELL of a deal.

A lapidary quoted me close to a GRAND for those grips!

Indeed sir, that is the deal of the century! Last .32-20 I saw was in relatively fair condition and the LGS was asking $799 for it. And no jade stocks either. Great acquisition on your part.

If that's actually real jade, then someone put in a lot of work (not to mention expense!) . . . jade is a very hard mineral.
Quite a find you've got there!

I've got an old gunsmithing book with an article on a dentist who made jade stocks. It was pretty interesting and looked like a tremendous amount of work. Neat to read, but the end result wasn't really to my taste. Thanks for this thread. :)

Finally got to shoot it at Larry's this weekend. I think I have a new favorite! Single and double action it's handy for having a long barrel and I managed to ring Larry's armor-plate chicken (ask him) 5 out of 6 times. About the power of a 'soft' 9mm (115gr bullet at 1050fps) noiser than I expected but a joy to shoot.

Need to put 4 boxes of Ultramax 32-20 on my birthday wish list!
