The Last M1

By Wallew

Clarice sat, watching the sun go down, crying softly. She held the M1 Carbine that her Grandfather had carried in WWII on Iwo Jima. He brought it back and told all sorts stories of horror and heroism. About young men fighting for the freedoms she now held so dear.

How had it come to this? Tomorrow was the deadline to turn in all firearms to the government. The penalty for refusing were so severe, so unjust, that it made Clarice wonder why this was happening. The word on all the internet chat rooms was the federal government had all ready gone to the United Nations and worked out the logistics for the UN to assign troops from China and Russia to help ‘round up’ anyone not willing to turn their firearms in.

At first, Clarice was willing to let go of one of the last vestiges of her Grandfather. But before she turned this firearm in, she decided to do some research on the internet and she was surprised, then astounded and finally infuriated. A very small group of people were spreading lies that were behind this movement to ban all firearms. This group then turned that pack of lies into law by the slimmest of margins. The president signed the bill with glee and at the press conference afterwards literally gloated how she and her companions in the house and senate had twisted arms and promised ‘doom and gloom’ to those who would not support this bill.

Many people promised lawsuits, the contention being that this law overturned the 2nd Amendment to the constitution. Which would need to be approved by a 2/3 margin of states before becoming law. Which did not happen. The bill was presented in the House of Representatives by a Democratic Congresswoman, who did so just as the Congress was adjourning before the Christmas Holidays (and would not be reviewed until the Congress was restarted the following year, when it was too late to rescind it) where it passed by one vote. From there, it was immediately sent to the Senate and the Democrats won, only with the Vice-President casting the tie-breaking vote just as the Senate was supposed to be adjourning for the remainder of the year. Madam President was overjoyed and executed a nationally televised bill signing Christmas day, exclaiming that peace would indeed be forthcoming to the United States. By this time, grass roots firearms groups were finally getting wind of the shenanigans in Washington, DC and many swore that this would not stand.

After the first of the New Year had come and gone, with all the politicians returning back to Washington, DC, all of the Republicans and many of the Democrats were taken aback at what had been done ‘in back rooms’. Many claimed that it was a reversion to the old ‘Tammany Hall’ days where deals were made and politicians were bought and sold.

With all the claims and counter claims flying around Washington, Madam President made a televised speech at the United Nations the second week of January, where she told the United Nations that she might require ‘help’ in enforcing this ground breaking new law.

The law itself was easy enough to understand. All firearms of every kind were to be turned into the local police or sheriffs department. There was a grace period of ninety days, after which anyone (other than government agents) found with a firearm would be put in jail for the rest of their lives. No parole, no excuse, no reason would be accepted for not relinquishing your firearms. The same held true for all ammunition, any component or part that could make ammunition or any chemicals that could be combined together to make explosives.

That last line caused the government a little trouble, temporarily. But Madam President put her foot down and told the media, ‘That’s what the law says, so that’s what we will enforce. There will be no exclusions.’ When it was pointed out that fertilizer and cleaning solvents were on the list, Madam President was asked if she was suggesting that fertilizer or cleaning solvents would no longer be used by the White House staff?

The response from the President had a chilling effect on the normally supportive media. Madam President said, “The law SPECIFICALLY EXEMPTS all government employees. So the answer to your question is that we will continue to use fertilizer and cleaning solvents as we see fit. After all, you don’t see anyone on my staff using these chemicals to make explosives.”

As all this kept turning over and over in Clarice’s mind, she started thinking back further and further as to how in God’s name could this have happened, especially here in the United States. It had all happened so quickly. Most people were just becoming aware that they were going to be breaking a law starting the day after tomorrow. April 15th. While it used to have a bad connotation because of the Internal Revenue Service, it now had now become know as Black April, or ‘The day that will live in infamy’.

With the ‘grace period’ for turning in a firearm without consequences about to come to a close, it was quite apparent to everyone that less than thirty percent of the estimated 300 million firearms had actually been turned in.

Class III collectors of machine guns had lobbied fast and furious trying to get an exemption or an extension, so they could sell millions of dollars of firearms they had literally spent a lifetime collecting. Several had spoken up and told the local police that they would be ‘pursuing legal options’ prior to the deadline. When the police asked if they would be turning in their million dollar collections, to a person they refused to answer, telling the police that the ‘time for that decision had not yet arrived’.

Started out interesting, but...

Although the intent is well recieved, the execution of the story borders on ludicrous. The thought of the political climate turning the way it did repulses me, but to be frank, the sheer racism on the latter part just blew the whole credibility thing right out of the water.

Not to say there isn't some merit of truth to it (MS13 gangs being out of hand, or class III owners being responsible enough to help in the time of crisis, for example), but to me the overtone was remeniscent of a KKK gathering. This is NOT the kind of exposure us pro-2nd Ammendment folks need. Casts us all in a very poor light, if you ask me.

YMMV, though...

Besides,

IF that sad day should ever come, 99% of American gun owners will just turn them all in and roll over.

If gunnies are too lazy to get off their butts and vote, you think they'll really start a revolution? Hahahahahahahahaha

I'd have to agree with you there. The idea that most dark-skinned Soldiers are Muslim or Muslim extremist is ridiculous and racist.

It gets cheesy, and i had fun reading it, however the alcohol might have helped.

Yeah, i don't get the black national guardsman likely = nation of islam idea.

This is a tired, old, recurring theme... One without basis or premise. I for one am sick of the defeatist attitude of THR members... This comes for a years long lurker...

Had the same problem with the story as most here. The writing style was so-so, and then it took that disturbing racist turn. Not good.

You are full of it. The second amendment will never be struck down. Guns will never be turned in. Wild conjecture and rants do nothing. Pure fiction. I hate clinton and she is antigun but this country will never go that far because we won't let it.
