Back in the day, around 20 years ago, I carried a S&W 4506 on the job. Yes, it was heavy - because it is all stainless steel construction.

And it is bet your life reliable and shoots like a laser. And it was highly visible too. In the holster and out. Many a miscreant ceased his anti social activity after the mighty 4506 was pulled and pointed in his direction.

I was given my 4506-1 upon retirement. It now resides on my night stand and is carried regularly during cooler weather. The weight never bothered me. I use a good gunbelt with an Aker flatsider holster. And isnt 41 ounces what the vaunted 1911 weighs? ;)

Any other fans of this fine 45 here? :)

I've got it's Daddy, the 645.:) (Seen here with my equally '80s chic 686-0)

Had a 4566, which was nice, especially the Novak sights, but not super crazy about the plastic grip/spring housing on the 3rd Gen. guns. Comfortable, but not comforting.

I also prefer the half-cock hammer on the earlier guns to the hammer-block on the later ones, but all are darn nice pistols!

Every time I look at S&W steel-framed autos, I can only see how far down the grip the trigger guard goes. :(

C'mon, bro, can't start a thread like this and not give us pics!:D

Always wanted a 745... the other S&W variants never interested me. I don't do well with DA/SA autos, or slide mounted safeties. Didn't S&W have a DAO version of the 4506/et al?

Maybe the most reliable .45acp ever made. I have a surplused CHP one. It is sighted right on the money for ball , I smoothed out the trigger a little . I like these for "truck" gun duty, one is locked into my truck Vault with 2 extra mags and a box of ammo and a holster. I know I can depend on it and it is as accurate as I am. A great gun, one of S&W's best pistols.

I totally forgot that Crockett's Bren Ten had a stainless (or chromed?) slide. Most of them that I have seen pictured had a blued slide. I am clearly not as knowledgeable or cool as you, mi'NIGHTLORD. :p

While I liked the compact 9mm.s S&W made I never could get comfortable with the grip frame on the .45 versions. The only large frame .45 I could get a decent grip on was the SIG P220.

I had one, but the distance from the front of the grip to the back seemed a mile long, didn’t fit my hand well.but was rock solid firearm otherwise

I had one for a while. They are good guns, but I can't afford to keep them all so let mine go. I could certainly see where you have an attachment to yours though.

The compact late production ones with light alloy frames and added rails were actually really good pistols. I would have no problem in picking one over Sig and pocket money saved if I needed CCW .45ACP.

I had a 4586 and I regret selling it. Mine wasn't all that accurate, but it was absolutely reliable and one serious, sold piece of machinery.

We have an early example of the 4506 pre Novak sights, step side frame and the concave trigger guard. We milled the slide to accept the rear Novak sight and recontoured the face of the trigger guard. S&W complemented us on our workmanship and made an employment offer which we declined.

The only older Smith auto I have is a .40 caliber 4013. I haven’t shot it in at least a decade, I think I’ll take it out the next time I hit the range.

The .45 Smiths always seemed to be ones guys liked, and with the history it has with you I’m glad you still have it. As with the other poster, the 5906 I carried from 1991 to 1993 was the worst gun I ever carried.

My two old-school S&W big autos, a 645 and a 1006 (basically the same as a 4506, but in 10mm). The 645 was my duty weapon, way back when...
