There are a million threads on our specific views towards certain calibers and their effectiveness on various critters or for SD. For fun, what do you consider the ranges of minimum calibers for..
Grasshoppers-Rats-Rabbits-Coyotes-Dogs-Deer-Moose-Big Bears-SD

Personally:

Use, Minimum , Current load out
Grasshoppers-Rats , .177 HV pellet , .22 LR Rifle
Squirrel-Rabbit , .22 HV pellet , .22 LR Rifle
Coyotes-Pronghorn , .223 , 30-06 125gr.
Deer , .243 , 30-06 180gr.
Moose-Brown Bear , .270 , 30-06 180gr.
SD , .380 Ball , .45 ACP Speer GDHP

And of course for HD, .380 min, but I like at least a 20GA shotgun with 00 buckshot. Havent bought my shotty yet though :(

OK. This one is just all over the place.

SD? Against squirrels? Not a chance.

Hunting? Grasshoppers? Aw, c'mon. Really?

Fun? Nope.

A big headache? Yep. Makes me miss the "9mm vs. .45ACP" debates.

Whatever you can carry everyday. A knee to the groin or even a thumb to the eye could be enough to stop an attack, so you could say your hands would be the minimum.

Let me get this straight. You asked about minimum SD caliber and list the 25 Auto but not the .38 Special??? Are you serious?

Sorry, I can't answer the Poll and I can't understand your first post since you went OT and totally turned away from your own topic.

.475 or .500 Linebaugh, or. 500 JRH along with .500 Linebaugh Maximum, and let God sort it out.

After all, tomorrow is His birthday;-)

I trying to read and poll with a generally open mind....but, how in the heck is someone supposed to answer the poll question with only one caliber choice?

"what do you consider the ranges of minimum calibers for.. Grasshoppers-Rats-Rabbits-Coyotes-Dogs-Deer-Moose-Big Bears-SD"

Incidentally, you post 8 answers yourself!! Don't know if you can go back and change the poll question, but there really is no way to answer this question with one single caliber. Doesn't make any sense.

You seem to have left out the .38 special ?.

That would be on the list after the 9 MM,imnsho.

And if no other option was present - I vote for the .22 LR.

I think it's fair to assume that the O.P was referring to S.D. against another human. My first thought was 38 special +P, as that was not on the list I will vote for 9M/M as my bare bones min. And as always i would prefer a .357 Magnum.

Happy Holidays All:D,

Self Defense...

I chose .22 due to it being the lowest caliber on list!

Lame.... Self Defense! I would have chosen .17 or Pellet rifle if it had been there. (and generally have a pellet rifle somewhere, kids love to shoot cans
and they are great teaching tools, & I would not want to be shot with it.

To defend myself I would use what is available regardless of caliber.

I cc......25,.32,.380,9mm,.38/.357 regularly!

Sometimes .41, .44, .45 Auto, winter weather makes it easier for the bigger guys.

I am loyal to all my guns and feel comfortable carrying any of them regardless of caliber. I am most comfortable with the knowledge that out of any of my guns I can hit what and where I am pointing it.

Old bear

Hi Old Bear did you see the post on here regarding FBI statitics on one shot stop?

The .357 actually is the highest percentage one stop shot with 125 gr! 95.8% in 5.7 seconds.

even the lowly .380 had a 70% in 10.2 seconds which I thought was cool!

To make the poll work, the first Post should be amended to reflect SD only and add the words: "Which caliber would you pick on purpose for SD?"

Obviously, if we didn't have our preferred gun with us, then any gun in any caliber will have to do if that's all there is.

If I'm ever attacked by an FBI report based on faulty info, only then will I consider the .380 as a viable choice.....but only if the report isn't thicker than 10 pages.........:D

.380 Not Viable......Please!

The FBI statistics was actually a post for fun! I actually think .357 is over the top for self defense. I happen to love .357 magnum and hunt whitetail with a 6 inch. But then if I were defending myself at 100 yards i would love it for SD....anyway...

keeping this within what the OP had listed, there are none listed that are NOT viable for SD!

To think otherwise is actually silly.....NOT one caliber listed would you like to be shot with, and if shooter new his gun you would most likely not live! My brother who is EMT has zipped the bags on victims from .22 and .25!

To stick within the question asked: My .380 is the most carried out of all my CC guns (my .32 follows 2nd choice), with that said In a SD situation It would not fair well for BG and prove to be fatal. It is VERY viable!

PS: Most SD situations occur in under 25 feet! (statistically? and thats a stretch IMO!) And carrying a cannon does not insure defeating the BG. Shot placement and preparedness for SD are the only things that enhance the odds of an attack will go to your favor.

Merry Christmas To All On THR

Luke 2:10 - “And the angel said unto them, Fear not: for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people.”

I voted for the 380. Should have the 38sp. on the list.:scrutiny:
Thought that the choice of 44mag for SD is a bit of over kill,:what: but what do I know. Love the 357 mag and 9mm.;) 22, 22mag and 25 Why? 32 and not the 32 mag. Need to think this over a bit better.IMHO.:neener:

I voted .380ACP as the current crop are as small and light as any of the lessor options. But rule #1 of a gun fight is have a gun! Even a .22LR single shot is better than no gun.

Generally the biggest gun you can conceal in the largest caliber you can handle is the best bet. If thats only a .25 or .32 so be it. I don't recommend .22 at all because rimfire is just never going to be as reliable as is centerfire.
