I have been doing some research to help my make a good purchase with my next gun build and run across this web page. I enjoy buying rifles and then customizing them. This is a new found hobby for me and I have already built up a 10/22 with the butler creek side folder, match trigger and other goodies.:D I also just finished a Chinese sks with the collapsing stock, it turned out nice but doesn’t feed worth a crap with the 30round mag.:banghead: :cuss: Frustrated with this I have decided to start up a new project with an ak-47. I need a good starting gun that will be worth the time when I’m done. I am not a pro so I won’t be building from scratch but I can do a good bit. The wasr looks good but I have heard mixed responses. Other than the lack of side dimples, I can fix/modify small problems. Would this be a good gun for my needs? If so what should I look out for?

The only place the WASR is lacking is in the cosmetic department. The lack of mag dimples is not a problem. It does allow your magazine to wobble a little bit, but that is not detrimental to feeding or ejecting. While shopping, keep and eye out for early Century builds. Some of these had problems like canted front sight bases or canted gas blocks. You could also try your hand at building an AK from a parts kit and a pre-bent receiver flat.

For the price, I think the WASR-10's are a great buy. They are also very easily customized for a reasonable cost. Although mine didnt have ANY problems, I'm told to watch out for canted front sights and/or gas tube, but there are instructions on the net (I forget where exactly at the moment) to correct this if needed, however it appears it is merely a cosmetic thing and does not affect accuracy, reliabilit or gun life. Here's mine as an example.

I've never had a problem with mine. I finished the wood on mine put on a recoil buffer and a pistol grip. I wanted an authentic feel to mine. They do have an annoying trigger slap to them though. I still havent gotten mine fixed yet.

tapco trigger

Thanks for the info, I’ll get some pics out of my progress ASAP. I’m going to pick one up from a local dealer this weekend so I appreciate the feed back. I will keep my eye open for the canted front sight. I’m also planning on ordering the g3 single hook trigger group from tapco. Anyone know how these good these are??

mine had it. i popped the sear out and took it to a bench griner. you just remove a little bit of metal. no biggie.

JRFOXX

JRFOXX what do you think about that buttstock? Does it feel pretty sturdy? Does it look or feel cheap up close?

What kind of pistol grip is that?

I like the looks of Tapco's double hook FCG. I'm looking at one for a WASR.

most of the new wasr's brought in by CAI already have the Tapco Triggers in them. My WASR was bought in Jan of 05 and has absolutely no trigger slap in it. So, I'd recommend checking the trigger and/or shooting it to verify any triggerslap before buying parts or taking the dremel to it. :what:

sorry for hijacking this post but, what is trigger slap and how do you fix it? im about to but a wasr-10 and i want to be happy.

Trigger slap is what it sounds like--the trigger slaps you.

After firing a round, when the trigger is reset, it often snaps forward rather quickly, and can cause pain. Hence, trigger slap. Don't try to fix it yourself, or you might end up with the alphabet agency looking into your practices.

is there an aftermarket part i can buy to fix it then, or do i have to take it to a gunsmith?

The cheapest fix for trigger slap is here: http://www.gunsnet.net/Linx310/slapfix.htm (there is NO ATF problem doing this.

The easiest way to fix trigger slap is one of Tapco's G2 kits: http://www.tapco.com/product_list.asp?dept=190&last=13

Most newer GP WASR-10s already have the G2 kit installed. Older ones that do not, take the single-hook kit. You can use the double hook kit, but you'll have to dremel a small slot (not difficult).

GP WASR-10s are great guns, and often shoot better than other AKs that were imported as surplus kits, because the WASR-10s are imported new, with new barrels, these aren't shot-out kit guns.

Red Star Arms also makes an adjustable AK trigger that is supposed to be very nice. I couldn't see spending $75 for a trigger on a $300 minute-of-badguy gun, so I went the Dremel route and I now have the nicest trigger I've ever felt on an AK.
