Perhaps as a voting block the CSA may exist as you say but you will not see states actually secede from the union and succeed at it.

The country already paid that price in blood and treasure. Two of my grandfather's brothers died in that war. The weaponry of the "Union" forces is much more advanced now and any CSA armed rebellion would fail miserably in about 10 minutes.

I live in KY. They didn't secede last time (due to northern pressure) and I really don't think they would now. While mostly conservative, the northern part of the state is still somewhat liberal/moderate (what ever that means).

BTW, what state or country do you hail from? I notice your profile is useless except you were listed on TFL as being born in 1970.

How many military bases are in those 17 states? Do you really think we would give all those weapons back just on general principle?

Unlikely? Yes. Impossible? Hardly. The nation is increasingly split between states, and not just on gun rights. My mistake may be to look at the state level, though, rather than the county level. The rural/urban splits within states is deep and profound. To the extent that someone from rural Oregon may have virtually nothing in common with someone from an urban center.

Think of it this way. 20 or 50 or 75 years ago, a Democrat from Burns could shake hands with a Democrat from Portland and they'd see eye-to-eye on most of the major issues. Now? I'm not sure there are any Democrats in Burns, and the GOP in Portland is a muted minority. Add to that the fact that party loalty is nothing like it once was, and what do we have to keep us together? Fear of the alternatives, I suppose.

This is asinine.

Pardon me, but I thought this was the high road.
Disagreements are one thing, but what need is there for a comment like that?

And exactly why is it "asinine"? It happened once, it could happen again.
Personally, I don't think it is likely, as the fighting spirit has been bred/trained out of most people by the public indoctrination system.
But I could be wrong.

Whoa There, Pards!

You're all thinking about this the wrong way.

The civil war "settled" the "question" of seccession. (Wrongly, from a purist's perspective, I might add)

There IS, however, an OPEN QUESTION:

"Can we forcibly eject states like NJ and CA from the union?"

We will need ports. Arizona and Utah have already passed the resolution to secede :scrutiny: New Mexico and Texas? Texas has ports. Nevada and California? Big prize, but unlikely. Wyoming, Idaho, Oregon? Possible. Oregon may resist :uhoh:

Because this IS the high road

Asinine is the perfect response. Any place else it would be "are you oughta yer @#$%^&* mind?

Texas and Colorado allies?

We dissolve the Union that ended The Cold War?

We dissolve The Union that produced the world's only superpower?

I'm out.:banghead:

Also forgot Arizona ... though I admit increasingly iffy due to liberal in-migration.

All kidding aside, consider the CSA question from a geologic perspective. Will the United States be the united states 100 million years from now? No way. 1 million years? Doubtful. 100 years? Now it gets interesting.

Isn't a question of whether our country will blow apart and change in massive ways. Only a question of when ... like every other country in the history of the world. It will ebb and flow. Fortunately, we've been living in a wonderful period, in many ways.

hmmmm

having seen some rather messy sausage makin's this last week I have thoughts on the old saw that this is the worst form of government except for everything else.

having noted that we are not truly getting the government we pay for...

only the best misrepresentation that money can buy...

might it be better to spend the thoughts about succession on calling an new constutional convention? several states have pointedly asked about it to the level of passing resoultions in favor of one...(you'll have to hunt up the list I don't have it handy)

this drivel from the Democrats/RINO crew almost is an advert for anarchy...

at least there is direct consequence for mendacity in anarchy, high enough levels would most likey get the liars shot...

<NASCAR approved flame suit on>

IIRC Jefferson wanted a convention/revolution every 10/20 years.

This would never work IMHO. Like Cosmoline said, the rural/urban split is much deeper than even in pre-CW America.

Look at Florida - the "panhandle" is almost entirely different from the Treasure Coast, which is different from Palm Beach County, which is different from Miami. Lots of different political viewpoints and issues.

I thought the CW was a ghastly mistake - no need to go there again.:(
