The guy was telling me a few days later that the stevens had been in the family since the '50s and how he felt kind of guilty for selling it. I already felt like a tool for getting them that cheap so I gave him the stevens back!

Good on ya! That's good karma that'll come back to you.

Go for the Marlin 60. I got mine for 150 out the door. Brand new. Great gun.

As for those Henry Survival rifles, the concept is awesome, and the price seems good. Until you handle one. The stock is unbelievably wide, and the thing reeked of cheapness. I had that "internet urge" for one, but it promptly dissipated when I first picked one up.

Just a thought, have you perhaps considered a mossberg bolt action like the one she shot? I don't know if you have access to the friends and maybe wanted some variety, but a friend just bought one here (in WI) for about $110. I suppose it seemed if that's the gun what made her want a .22, for as inexpensive as they are new it'd be hard to go wrong.

Don't overlook the Savage model 64F. I have one and it is pretty good. I put all my new shooters on it and they love it. It functions well and is easy to field strip. You do need a flathead, but that is the only tool required to strip it. The accuracy is pretty good, but I don't take it too far out.

go for a savage mrk2 most accurate little .22 i have ever held. and it $120 at wal-mart. best thing about it is when shes not using it you can take care of squirrels like noones bussiness, or better yet have her do it. When i say accurate in talking sub 1" groups at 100yds
