Help picking parts for a 10/22

Took my once-anti-but-no-more fiance' to the gun store a few weeks back to pick out her first rifle. I tried very hard not to try to suggest she buy any one thing and let her pick for herself. Well in all of Gander Mt. she picked a 10/22 CRR. Thats my girl Gave her a copy of The Art of the Rifle to go with it.

Anyway I told her the 10/22 has a huge market for parts and she wants to make a few changes to it. She wants

a larger eaiser to use mag release
a larger easier to use bolt handle
a larger eaiser to use bolt hold/release
and maybe a stock saddle for her cheek weld and a small thin rubber buttpad

what size punches do I need ? the large one that blocks the bolt from coming out dosnt seem to want to be moved on its own.

I tried looking at 10/22 parts but I honestly cant tell the good from the bad, so without spending more than say 75ish for everything what would be the best way to help my Fiance' get her ultimate 10/22. Looking for good brands to go with or exact parts if you know them. Links appreciated.

Not sure about the "best parts"...but I just wanted to say "great choice". My wife grew up in an anti household. The first firearm she had ever been around was my best friend's 10/22. When she turned 21 I bought her a stainless 10/22, she loves that rifle.

Oh, and thanks for the tip, I just bought her "The Art of the Rifle" for a holiday present, it'll go great with the FAL I'm building for her.

Your fiancé made an excellent choice for a first gun.

There are a lot of after market mag releases available to aid reloading. If you are handly with a drill, you can even drill and tap the hole for a threaded rod or bolt or any other handy extension into the stock mag release. Many folks have done it. Extended mag releases are now well beyond even the pedestrian function of actually releasing the mag. Check out some of the custom releases at Rimfire Central. There really isn't a bas extended mag release out there. They all seem to work OK for their job, even the cheap ones.

Same goes for bolt handles, though not quite a numerous in aftermarket offerings as the mag release.

Same for the bolt stop. It's really quite easy to make it quick release by yourself with a file or Dremel (type) tool. It's really not a big problem to activate the stock release. I've seen quite a few number of folks having trouble releasing it though. This is where the quick release really helps out.

I use a Blackhawk cheek pad on one of my 10/22M-.17 that also has a pouch. I keep extra mags in the pouch. To adjust to the proper height (if you need to), however, you'll need to put some foam under the pad. There are other makes out there too.

Any old punch or dowel smaller than the pin will do to remove the bolt pin. However, run a brick or two of ammo through the gun and the pin will fall out on its own eventually. Some hardcore folks don't like the idea the pin hole elongates a little over long use and use a buffered pin asa replacement to the stock one, but for me, it's not a big deal, witht he exception of my .17HMR conversions. Those guns will eat up bolt pins due to higher bolt velocities.

The best thing I got for my 10/22 was a Volquartsen target hammer.

Got a bargain bin model from VQ for cheap. It really made the trigger better, which improves your accuracy much more than you would suspect.

Easy to install. I followed some directions from Chief Dave over at rimfirecentral

The parts we want are for ergonomics. Small metal parts that you have to presslpull hurt her dainty little hands. I told her that once she starts getting 5" groups at 100 yards I would buy her a barrel and we would start looking at target hammers and all that other stuff. Right now we just want it to be easy to use and painless.

go to rimfirecentral. go to the weaponkraft site. get a performance package for 20 to 30 bucks, with the ext mag release, hammer and ejector parts, s.s. takedown screw and torque wrench. These will make all the diff in the world.
especially the eaze of the ext mag release.
