I am new to this forum and wanted to get some of your opinions on the perfect hunting rifle for everyday use. I don't want a rifle thats so pretty that I'm afraid to take it in the woods. The options that I'm looking at are cz 550 american, tikka t3, fn model 70, and tc icon weathershield, I look forword to your opinions.

There is no too pretty to take to the woods.

Out of your choices I would cast my vote for the CZ 550 American. Got to go for the premium walnut stock. They are a functional thing of beauty.

For a utility gun a good used Remington ADL in .30/06 is hard to beat.

Of the guns you listed, the new FN/Winchester Mod70 are probably the best of the choices.

The new FN/Winchesters can be had in most any configuration. I personnaly prefer the blue steel and walnut. Some of the new M70's have some gorgeous wood.

The CZ550's are some nice rifles.

I can't get excited over the new Icon or Tikka. Too much modernity about them. I like the classic style and good looks of the CZ and Winchester.

The .30/06 cartridge is a no-fault decision. I'd owned several rifles/cartridges before I bought my '06 back in '75. I killed my first of many, many deer with it in '76. I've owned and killed deer with many other cartridges now. I've still got it........and own more than one '06.
Enough said !!!!

I just bought the Tikka and am amazed at the accuracy and the smoothness of the bolt. I feel like I made the right choice for me.

Me too. Tikka t3 lite in 30-06. zeiss conquest 3-9x. Its a work-horse just like all of my other guns. I'm taking it to the range this weekend to get dialed in

For an inexpensive accurate untility rifle go Savage, if you want some super refinment too get the Tikka. If you want a trotline weight get a new Remington :)
CZ 550 and Model 70 are some fine rifles, I don't own either at the moment so I cannot vouch for them, but I would not hesatate for a second to snatch one up if I found a good deal.

me and my buddy just bought a Tikka T3 light in stainless in 30-06

so far it shoots nice...I will be putting a recoil pad on mine

great gun for the money

I do like the idea of the cz because of the crf the set trigger and the bases are already milled into the receiver thats one less thing to loosen.

I bought my T3 Stainless NIB for $408. I LOVE IT. If I can find another deal like that one I will snatch it up in a heartbeat especaily if I can find one in 300WSM or 270 win. The recoil pad is a bit too stiff, but it is not any kind of issue with my sissy kicking 6.5x55. I have said it before and I will say it again, there is no better action or trigger anywhere at any price. I don't really like synthetics but the fiber/matrix synthetic on the Tikka is vastly nicer then the molded C-rap Remington, Marlin, and Savage use.

For hunting, how the rifle fits you and how it carries in your hand is much more important than anything else. If made by any mfg. of today it will kill anything on the N. American continent. If it doesn't fit you, you probably won't like it and you will end up selling it.

Ditto .351 Win., I'll add one personal caveat, iron sights. So many of these models mentioned have slick barrels. They are obviously cheaper to make and a lower mounted scope will out perform one mounted higher. But, I always jumped with a reserve parachute and I go hunting (if any distance) with either a back-up gun or a back-up plan.

Just a thought.

4 choices. To narrow for me. Try your local gun show...if you have any.
I`m sure you can find plenty of un-pretty 30-06`s. :)

Perfect? I don't know. Probably a classic pretty like a Winchester Model 70.

I have a Savage 111 FNCS in .30-06. Accutrigger and Accustock model. It really shoots great. First rifle I've had that overlaps holes at 100 yards. If I were to do it again, I'd have probably gotten a 114 as the wood stocks just appeal to me so much, but mine is a great work horse of a rifle and shoots great.

I have hunted with an old 30-06 springfield savage super sporter it is a true work horse . i would not trade it for any newer rifle , but then again i've hunted with it for over 30 years. maybe a rifle just grows on you over time.

FN produced Winchester. Either the Featherweight or EW depending on your tastes.

I picked a new Winchester 70 Extreme Weather in 30-06 for this role. I believe that the new Winchesters are the nicest production rifles out there currently. Otherwise, you could consider a Ruger M77 Hawkeye or All Weather as well for a bit less money. Tikkas feel like toys to me and I don't care for their Euro styling. I didn't really care for the TC Icon when I handled it, but I've heard its a nice accurate rifle if it appeals to you. The CZ 550 is nice but heavy and I'm not sure they make a stainless/synthetic, if that matters to you. Many like Savages on this forum, they are reportedly accurate but I can't get over how ugly they are, so I don't own one. If you view your rifle as basically a tool and don't care about aesthetics, than a Savage may appeal to you. I have a few Remingtons, both 700s and 7s, which are less than a decade old and mine shoot fine and have no cosmetic issues, but there has been reports of declining Remington quality lately. My recommendation would be a new Winchester 70.

I am a Winchester M70 fan, but the budget only allowed me to buy a Savage 111. I will still buy my Winchester someday, but that 111 is a fantastic rifle. It is surprisingly accurate, fits me like a glove, and has a very nice finish for the price.

Stay away from the Savage package deals, or at least leave the factory scope rings in the store. Those rings are horrid! They are way too high and won't stay tight.
