I've been wanting a stainless Commander lately and have been having trouble trying to decide between the XSE and the non-enhanced Combat Commander. I like everything about the XSE except for the ambi-safety and the front slide serrations. On the other hand, the standard Combat Commander lacked some of the enhancements I do like.
Today, the problem was solved. I was at a gun shop about 30 miles north of Orlando handling a new 04012XSE and thinking about taking the plunge when I happened to look over into the used gun case and spotted this stainless Colt. I asked to see it and, low and behold, it was a Mark IV Series 80 Combat Commander with just the enhancements I've been looking for:
Colt beavertail (I like the old Colt version)
elongated hammer
Lowered and flared ejection port
relieved frame behind the trigger guard
White dot sights
beveled mag well
standard spring plug/rod (I don't care for the FLGR)
The pistol came with it's original box/mags/ and paperwork and the price was over $200 less than the new XSE. The pistol appears completely unfired and as-new. I think all I'll want to add is another set of grips and an aluminum trigger and the gun will be about perfect for my taste.
The model is 04012E which, I believe is the model that preceded the XSE if I'm not mistaken. Can anyone tell me about when it was made based on the serial number in the photo? Here's my new friend:
