The "pressure" of buying surplus.

I second the "I'm cheap and like to shoot" sentiment. I also figure if you can acclimate yourself to the recoil of a mauser or mosin over time, using an AR or sks/ak is going to feel like a .22lr...

I know it seems a bit silly putting a fancy aperture sight or better trigger on a mosin/mauser, but even with some upgrades the savings in ammo over the life of the gun seem to far outweigh this. Besides, when I finally "wear out" my first Mosin, I can always transfer any drop in upgrades into the next one, eh?:)

Hey jag, I didn't really pay close attention to the prices of CZ52's, but I'm sure they were less than $200.

Yes, I have seen some Tokarev's, mostly the Polish version T33. I got mine for about $150 IIRC, and there are still some at the shows.

The only Chinese Tokarev Type 54-1 that I have seen recently, I bought (at the Wilmington show for $175 OTD).

Surplus 8mm is a nickle a round right now. Yeah, I'm feeling the pressure to buy more...

I really want to get a bunch of these surplus guns...
Specifically a Makarov, SKS and a K98...but I just can't afford them on my no-income live-at-home college-kid budget.
I hope that they're still all around at a good price when I finally DO get an income.
And if things go as planned, I should have plenty of cashola.
:D

Hey Poppy, have you seen Toks for around 150.00 lately? I sure would like to get one to be a companion for the soon to be mine cz52. The "pressure" is killing me!

jagd,

Stay strong!

The only thing that keeps me from BUYING more milsurp is that 'm still cleaning & prepping (and therefore NOT shooting) the ones I just bought! Although, today may very well be the day the M1 carbine goes to the range to go Bang!! (The Garand has less & less cosmoline in all the wrong places each day....)

Oh, and I'm still waiting on the C&R....

i recently purchased a k98 mauser and I couldn't be more happy with the purchase. I got some of the cheap turkish surplus ammo 8x57 in the bandoliers. what i've been noticing is a few of the spent casings end up cracking or having cracks in them. i look over the ammo before i load the rounds and none of them had cracks until after i fired them. could this harm the gun in anyway or does it mean I have a problem with the gun?any help would be appreciated. thanks

The advertisements dont help either. "last shipment,Going, going, gone..,final shipment of excellent/unissued rifles, last of the supply, get them while they are still available, our importer says this is the last of______., very limited quanities ,etc". I am sure They will all be gone someday, but some have been saying this for years. Now if I can figure out how to come up with the money for a few more K-31's before they are all gone. Oh the pressure!!

The only thing that keeps me from buying more (A LOT more) is that, being in the Army, I move every couple of years, and since the movers won't handle it, I have to move it myself. And it's not light.

7N1

JAG if you would consider selling or trading some of that ammo, please get in touch

wish I had seen it was available in time

Hey jag, I just saw your last question directed to me. Actually, my recollection was wrong about the Polish Tok TT33 that I bought. I was hunting for something in my gun closet and ran across the receipt for the TT33. I paid $185 plus tax for it and the dealer threw in a box of ammo.

I have seen some other Polish Tokarov's at shows lately, but not for $150;more like $200.

elokoman and anyone else that is interested in the 7N1 ammo, check out jandcsales.com, they still show some. I haven't bought from them personally, so I can't say how they are to deal with.

I haven't shot any of mine yet, but reports I have read indicate it may not be the "Holy Grail" of 7.62x54r. At least in Mosins. We shall see.

I dont think it's 'pressure'...it's more of an addiction. :uhoh:

My weakness is bulk ammo - if I go to a gunshow and they have crates of milsurp ammo sitting there I lose control and out flies the cash.

I'm seriously concerned about the weight on my second floor where the ammo is stored...rule is no more than 3 cases high but now I'm running out of perimeter wall space. Anybody know how much weight per sq. foot a 'normal' house is rated for? :uhoh:

I know that jag mentioned that he was getting his CZ52's from Aim, but for others in the area, there are three different dealers at this week ends Bill Goodman show in Dayton that had CZ52's.

One's price was $159 and the other two had $169; all plus tax. Still a good deal.

Also the dealer that I bought a Walther P1 from for $259 plus tax, had them today for $239 plus tax. He also had some CZ70's, didn't notice the price.

Hey Poppy, was the guy with the P1's the same guy that always has boxes and boxes of Yugo SKS's and Mosins? If so he's pretty alright to deal with, and good prices to. I bought a sweet M44 from him at the Sharonville show several months ago.

The CZ52's I picked up at AIM are very, very nice. A couple little scratches from storage and that's it. Highly recommend them if anyone is interested.

I couldn't make this show due to lack of funds, any Tokorevs at this show?

I went to a gunshow this weekend and walked out with two surplus guns. The ammo is cheap for them, and I'm teaching several people to shoot later today. The guns are easy to use and are reliable, which is good for any beginner.

Plus I only spent half of what I was planning, so I think that works out for the best.

Yea Jag, the guy with the P1's is the same guy and he also had some CZ50's or 70's this time too. He seems to be cutting prices more at every other show, so the inventory must be eating him up.

I did not seen any Tokorev's at this show.

One guy had an interesting selection of Hi Power clones and some cobbled together 1911's from various parts. One 1911A1 had a Sistema frame, a Remington Rand slide, and a barrel that I didn't recognize, but it had a S/N on it. This guy also had the Indian made clone of the Inglis Hi Power for $269; a good price.

Another guy had an FEG Hi Power that had a vent rib; a variety that I had not seen before. He claimed it was new and wanted $300 IIRC.

I spent my money on an ANIB stainless Ruger MKII target .22.
