The Shrinking World of the 1911?

The .45 acp in the 1911 platform takes a certain amount of maturity to appreciate. You may have to go through a series of wondernines and plastic pistols before you get there.

Haha, my dad started me off with wheelguns because he likes the cowboy stuff, and I'm big into 1911s. Hopefully my next gun will be a BHP if I see a good deal.

Is the low capacity and antiquated design of the 1911, coupled with the rather slow .45 ACP ( even in JHP form ) worth a person's time and effort?

I think this question would be better asked to the L.E. special teams and U.S. Special Forces units like Delta, why they use such a poor gun and anemic round.

Shoot what you prefer and are good with.

As an observer/participant since 1959, it seems to me that 95% of the so-called gee-whiz improvements in handgunnery since then have been illusory. The more consequential ones have been:

1. Better training--Gunsite type schools and Street Survival Seminars;
2. Body armor
3. Better sights and triggers
4. Better ammo--JHPs that actually work reliably.

Plug a good basic reliable 1911 into the above and you have all you need and nothing you don't. Plug a good basic DA revolver in and you aren't badly off either.

The older I get the more I think that DA/SA semiautos and Glocks are the wrong solutions to the question of what weapon will best keep me from harm.

Absolutely not worth any time or money. That is why I'm planning on getting one for my 21st birthday. I figured it was waste money on a handgun or booze, and the handgun will stick around a while! :D (Eh, New Year's is only two weeks after, so it's all good. ;) )

Of course it is a good design. Otherwise it wouldn't still be with us. Besides, I plan on having this pistol by my side out in the woods. No little 9mm weinie-shooter :neener: is going to be adequate and I don't need .44 Magnum power. It's not bears that bother me, it is the little critters my puppy dog may chase or get into. The .45 will be adequate for that, plus popping evil assault cans and rocks!

BTW, I think the 9mm is a fine caliber. Above comments were tongue-in-cheek. "Surely you jest!"

I wonder how many people who shoot in pistol competitions of one sort or another use something other than a 1911 style pistol.

Quite a few in my club, but only because all the 1911 shooters shoot their non-1911's in the second round. We usually move everyone through all the stations by lunchtime and then reshoot all of them with different guns afterwards. The only reason 1911s don't dominate overrall is their shooters using other pistols too (often a commander size or compact 1911 :) ).

Basically, it lasts because after trying out all the doodads, ultimately you gotta go with what works.

I guess if you have to ask, you just wouldn't understand. (Not trying to be a smart@ss ... just my point of view).

With the best competition shooters in the world (with only a very few exceptions), the most elite military units and some of the most high-speed LE special response units using 1911s ... and the enduring popularity in this country of the 1911 (it's just plain fun to shoot!), it begs the question: why this question?

The USA is the largest consumer handgun market in the world by far. Individuals don't look as hard at logistics, legal liability, or per unit cost as regulated agencies do. Individuals look at quality, performance, and esthetics. The more research I do the more I find the 45 ACP to be an excellent choice for a personal defense cartridge.

You think the 45 ACP is in a shrinking world. Look how the 10mm sells in other countries. . . oh wait! I don't think they've even HEARD of it. Only foreign manufacturer I know of chambering a handgun in this caliber is Tanfoglio. We have more wierd wild-cats, one-offs, and oddball rounds to fit tiny nitche markets because we have the interest and the $$$ here to drive them.

In foreign countries their lucky, and happy, to just HAVE A GUN. Here, we can afford to be particular and we have more freedom to exersize our right to use those guns for more than just punching paper at a club.

I have a Delta Elite as my only 1911, I have 1 Glock, and I have 3 CZs. Which will eventually be at least 4. Need to get that .45 ACP CZ 97B.
