Other than a barrel and magazine, what does it take to convert a .45 ACP loaded Springfield 1911 into 9x23? A new ejector? Recoil spring? I have an extra .45 that I'd like to make into something more interesting. Can I still use the .45 slide and frame, even though the .45 chamber is unsupported and the 9mm/38sup/9x23 is a supported chamber?

Only some 9mm/.38 Super/9x23 chambers are supported, it will vary by manufacturer. Other than the frame and it's internals just about everything will need to be changed. New slide, barrel (will need to be compatable with the frame), recoil spring, extractor, ejector (maybe, just depends on the pistol), and mag.

Not only will you need a new top end, and all the internals for it, I think the feed ramp is at a different angle.
