We had discussed the use of hearing protection by the toops in Iraq. Rather -we discussed the almost complete and total lack of hearing protection by the trooops in Iraq. I had been 'called out' (too strong, but best term I have) in that thread where I was whining that our guys weren't protecting their hearing.
Actually, the earplugs mentioned in RyanM's post have been mandated for use in Iraq and it is strictly enforced by the leadership there.

Jeff,
Have you tried them in the dark warehouse yet.
You mak be able to hear through both ears but can you accurately locate targets by sound, can you hear someone breathing down the back of your neck.

I am fully aware that hearing loss is a serious problem, I also know that tradeoffs have to be made to meet mission.
Even with the hearing loss I know I have from years on range and flightline, I still can hear those little clues better without active hearing protection, can locate potential targets better in the dark. On the range sure I'll wear 'em, operationally no way.

Sam,
I have yet to have a problem with them that wasn't related to the radio interface. Each earphone has a separate microphone and volume control. So telling what direction the sound is coming from has never been a problem for me. If you turn the volume up too much you will get some distracting noise from the wind if outdoors.

They aren't the perfect solution, but IMHO they are the best solution currently available. I'm sure they would be more widely used if they weren't so expensive.

Jeff

The better hearing protectors will not distort stereo ability. I have a set of Peltor's that doesn't affect my ability to locate sounds at all. Which shouldn't surprise anyone since they are specifically designed so that the wearer can retain that ability.
they didn't want to use active hearing protection, as they didn't want to trust it to not cut out speech at a critical moment.
There are now active protectors which limit the sound level instead of cutting out. Even if there is a gunshot, it will not cut out, it just won't pass harmful levels of sound. They will allow you to hear everything you would normally hear but protect your hearing and also give you the option of amplification.
