The sand has two functions : as a heat distributor, it helps get an even color, as a heat delayer, it helps get a finer oxidised "grain", slightly more scratch-resistant than if you do it without the sand. Nevertheless, it'll never be as resistant as the hot caustic blueing, but it's infinitely nicer.so right around 600ºf . I wonder what the sand does if anything. I'll try some other steel parts this week in the wood stove
